In regular season play, the Lucknow squad was undefeated. The team had a total of 97 nuts scored and only 31 runs against. In the first round of playoffs, Lucknow came up against the Sebringville 1 team. The much older Sebringville team, being strong both at bat and in the field, defeated Lucknow two games straight. The loss dropped Lucknow down into the Homebrew division where they met up with Walkerton. They beat Walkerton two games straight which sent them into the championship round with Belmore. In the first . game, Lucknow bats came alive as they defeated Belrnore 6-1. A hard fought second game saw Lucknow come up short 7-4. Saugeen hospital cutbacks could carry big price tag From page 6 Emergency Services Cutbacks to emergency room hours at Saugeen Memorial hospital in Southampton could .carry a big price tag for Bruce County emergency medical service. The ER is one of the busiest if not the busiest -- in Bruce County, said Emergency Services director Doug Smith. Smith is a for- mer ambulance manager for Saugeen Shores. Saugeen Memorial sees over 300 patients a year dur- ing the 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. hours that were threatened with closure. "I never thought I'd see the day,” he said about the prospect of having to transport those patients . to Kincardine or Owen Sound if Southampton ER closes at night. "It could have a very detrimental impact on the patient," Smith told county coun- cil. "I've seen cases myself where it. definitely would make a difference if we were on the road with them for an extra 20 min- utes or 30 min- utes." More time on the road per patient could add up to $500,000 to the county ambulance budget. "When the dedi- cated ambulance for the area leaves (to take a. patient to a 24-hour ER) they could be. gone for two and a half hours," Smith said. "We have to reposition all the vehicles in Bruce County and to do this we probably have to staff anoth- er ambulance somewhere some- how." Smith learned about the threat- ened cut to, ER service at Saugeen Memorial in the media. He was shocked that Grey Bruce Health Services did not consult with the county ambulance service about the possible cutback. An agreement with doctors and the province will keep Saugeen Memorial emer- gency department open round - the clock for the rest of .. this month, . but Mayor Mike Smith said the communi- ty is still negotiat- ing for longer term solution. "They : have to give us more than 30 -days notice," he said about Grey Bruce Health Services decisions on changes to the hospital's services. Meanwhile Smith is worried about lack of plan- ning for the ripple effect of a closed ER. "When we start taking patients that would normally go" to Southampton to Kincardine and Owen Sound what is it going to do to their capacity?" he said. "To add that many emergency patients in the mid- dle of the night, I don't know what would happen." The public also needs warning about emergency room closures, Smith said. "Do we cover hospital and ER signs? Take the blue hospital signs off the highways?" he asked. "1 don't know how ' we fix this. Options are costly and the option of doing nothing is even more costly," Smith said. Southampton hospital isn't ,the only one facing emergency room staffing pressures. Kincardine is "run- ning on a razor's edge", said Deputy Mayor Laura Haight, while Northern Bruce, Peninsula Mayor Milt McIver said the threatened ER cut back at Saugeen Memorial is "only: the tip . of the iceberg". "Hopefully it won't happen," Smith said about emergency depart- ment closures and cutbacks. "I'm counting on people intervening." soap BOX.Dery: at Lucknow Fail Fair Sunday, Sept. 20 Noon registration Races start at 1 p.m. • Two Age Classes 8 -12 & 13 -16 • No entry fee • Prizes: 1st $50, 2nd $25 • Two classes: Stock Cars (no bearings in the wheels) Super stock cars (with bearings in the wheels) • Safety Rules: Must wear CSA approved helm?t Must have working brake Participant must be 8ncosed (no open sided cars) • General Rules: Parent/Guardian signs waiver form Wheels must be 12 inches or less Maximum length of car 5 feet Car must have a working brake Races are against the clock Contact: Cliff Mann for more info 528-3500 (home) 528-3913 (work) Lucknow FaiIL Fair Parade Saturday, Sept. 19, 11 a.m. sharp • Route starts at the comer of Campbell Street and Havelock Street, (United Church corner) Lucknow. • Parade assembly no later than 10 a.m. (registration, judging) on Havelock St. South and Willoughby St. East. • Parade marshals and judges will be available to give direction • There is $1,300 in prize money and a large variety of entry categories children's section, pedestrians, horses, floats, vehi- cles.
