Bruce Power to apply for fuel
BY PAT HALPIN
Special to the
Sentinel
Bruce Power
will apply for
approval to put
fuel in\ Units one
and two when it
goes before the
Canadian Nuclear
Safety
Commission next
month.
That application
will be done along
with the license
renewal for Bruce
A and B, said
Bruce Power
spokesperson Ross
Lamont.
The Oct. 3 hear -
mg is a regularly
scheduled proce-
dure about safe
operation and reg-
ulation of the
plant, Lamont told
Bruce County
councillors,
"This is just the
renewal time for
our license at
Bruce A and Bruce
B. The' license is
not changing for
that," he said.
"The one change
is our - need to
change the license
for Bruce Units
one and two to
allow us to refuel
in anticipation of
the restart. That
does represent a
change in the
license."
Bruce Power has •
been working with
CNSC staff on site
throughout the
restart project: The
fueling will likely
be done late in
2010. That's a year
behind schedule,
but Bruce Power is
confident about
the licensing hear-
ing.
"We know
what we have to
do to make sure
the units are prop-
er for restarting
and we will do
that," Lamont
said.
He -described the
fueling license
application •as a
`natural progres-
sion' to take the
Units from the lay-
up license that's
been in place for
years and return
them to operation.
"Even when we
restarted Units
three and four we
had to get a license
change," Lamont
said. -
"Having a reac-
tor ready to be
refueled after
being de -fueled is
not something
that's happened a
lot of times. It's
something we've
all known is com-
ing."
"It's a natural
progression and
the CNSC - prop-
erly so as the regu-
lator - wants to
make sure the
nity is
there
opportufor the public
to have comment
about operation of
the . station," he
said.
Bruce County
council'' is already
preparing to make
a submission at the
hearing, which
will be at the CAW
centre in Port
Elgin.
"It's nice to see
-the CNSC come to
Our community for
the hearings," said
Saugeen Shores
Mayor Mike
Smith.
"1 think it's
important (to
make a presenta-
tion)," he said.
"Bruce Power.sup-
ports - us so -we
should go . • to the
hearings and sup-
port Bruce
` Power."
Public comment
is a significant part
of the hearing,
Lamont said.
"It's important
for the regulator to
understand that the
community has
confidence in our
operation," he
said.
Doc recruit
reax
Bruce Power has
an eye on its own
recruitment efforts
with its half -mil-
lion dollar pledge
to help with doctor
recruitment in
Kincardine and
Saugeen Shores.
The company
has hired 1700
people since 2001
and recruits 250
new staff a year,
according to
spokesperson Ross
Lamont. Health
care is "absolutely
essential" on the
priority list for
prospective
employees.
"It's difficult for
(Bruce Power) to
recruit people if
you don't have a
hospital' or a fully -
serviced hospital,"
said Saugeen
Shores Mayor
Mike Smith.
"They recognize
there's a real chal-
lenge with hospi-
tals and the chal-
lenge is (a - short=
age of) doctors.
To help with a
solution Bruce
Power is offering a'
program - that
includes finances
and the services of
a recruiter to work
with Saugeen
Shore's and.
Kincardine
recruitments com-
mittees.
The goal is to
get both communi-
ties working
together. .
"The . program
will look at a way
that we can work
jointly to ensure
that doctor recruit-
ment program is
succe:ssful,".
Lamont said.
"We • want
municipalities
working together
on this as opposed
to individual
efforts which may
in fact not be as
effective."
The assistance
comes at a critical
time.
Saugeen Shores
hospital emer-
gency department
is in a staffing cri-
sis that nearly led
to a temporary clo-
sure this month.
It's now getting
provincial help to
keep its emer-
gency department
staffed and open
around the clock.
