Ripley development passes hurdle From page 1 Ripley development A commercial development pro- posfd for -Ripley has passed another hur- dle. Developer David Brown wants to turn the downtown feed mill into a.commer- cial complex. Bruce County council has given the ok to that plan, and to a proposed 50 unit subdivision in the village. The Ripley Market commercial development in the centre of town com- pliments om-p iments work the municipality has done on the down- town park, said Huron -Kinloss Mayor Mitch TwoIan. That work includes improve- ment to the park in the square. Plans now on the books include the commercial devel- opment, some park- ing and residential development, as well as the .new sub- division. The commercial proposal is generat- ing a lot of interest in the community, Twolan said. "There hasn't been this kind of development in main street Ripley or in any other municipality in Bruce County really for a very long time," he said. "We've had* a' lot of big box stores • , t1.4r+1r;ra and that type mov- ing in, but the reju- venation of an old heritage site (is unique)." Both Ripley proj- ects have attracted strong interest, Twolan said, . and he's hoping for a case of 'build it and they will come'. Developer David Brown wants to go ahead with the com- mercial project as. soon as possible. That could be another sign that the economy is starting to turn around, Twolan said. Bruce Power growth Bruce Power is growing - this time off. site. It's opening an office in the former EMA grocery store in Port Elgin for staff connected with future refurbish merit projects. Bruce Power is renovating the store to make office space for about 35 people. Eventually as many as 70 managers, planners, engineers and support staff could be working out of the main street office. Some Bruce Power staff are already working out of leased space in the business park at the north end of Port" Elgin, according to a statement released recently. .The company is bursting at the seams an sitp,CEO Duncan Hawthorne said in the state- ment. Bruce Power plans to refurbish the remaining Bruce A and B units and supply 6300 megawatts of elec- tricity to the Ontario grid. That could mean 3,000 con- struction jobs and up to 4,000 long term jobs operating the eight units. Bruce Power will continue to look at off site options in Kincardine and Saugeen Shores as workloads related to the refurbishment projects grow, Hawthorne said. Hogweed Giant Hogweed is plaguing municipal - hies across Bruce County. There are circula- tion resolutions ask- ing the province to put the poisonous weed on the noxious weed list. Some want . the county to spearhead that effort, and step in to help control the weed. Municipalities say the huge and rapidly -spreading plant is becoming a major menace. Giant Hogweed looks like Queen's Anne Lace but grows eight feet tall.. Its juice can cause severe skin blisters. Bruce County got little response to an offer • last year to help municipalities deal with Giant Hogweed, said planner Chris LaForest, That's changed now that water- borne seeds have spread the poison- ous weed through- out the county. It takes a little bit of expertise to * treat it right," Warden Bill Goer, said about - the need for . the county to efforts to fight Giant Hogweed. "If you cut a stalk down you end up .._ six stalks. It has to be sprayed." Bruce County is the only one in the region not taking action to eradicate the plant, said Brockton Mayor Charlie Bagnato. Municipalities have the authority to spray for Giant Hogweed if itis on their property stan- dard bylaw, LaForest said. Individual munic- ipal efforts aren't enough, Goetz said.
