A new trend in those numbers is that the caseload in July was up from June's level. That's an exception compared with other years, Director Terry Sanderson told county council. "I'm concerned that we're going to start seeing some changes obviously in what's going to happen with cases. I'm expecting we're going to see an increase in caseload over the fall for sure," Sanderson said. Traditionally social assistance num- bers climb; toward the end of the year as summer seasonal jobs wind up. This year those numbers are being compounded :by people are running out of employment insurance benefits and turning to social assistance. "Our intakes aren't exceptionally high. The average is about 80 cases a month but people just aren't going off (social assistance). They can't find work," Sanderson said, Bruce county foots 20 per cent of the total cost of social assistance payments, and has an obligation to provide that service regardless of the caseload size.
