Lighthouse has rich history

Construction of the light-
house began in 1857 and was
completed two years later.
The walls are made of two
layers of limestone and the
space between the two are
filled with rubble. The base
-walls are five feet thick and as
it tapers off to the top balcony,
which is about two feet thick.
The stones were laid in 1858
and the tower stands at 87 feet
tall.
The lantern room was the
last room to be completed. In
1858, six Frenchmen came to
Point dark and brought mate-
rial to build the room and

1859, the Point Clark
Lighthouse was lit and came
into service.
The first attempt to auto-
mate the lighthouse was in
1924 and lasted two years
before sailors complained
about its reliability. A new
light wasreinstalled in 1963.
The light stands 93 feet
above high waters.
The Point Clark Lighthouse
is one of six on Lake Huron
and Georgian Bay known as
the Imperial Towers.
Located beside the light-
house is the Lighthouse
Keeper's home, which is the
original built for the keeper
and his family. It - was built in
1857.

Dear Editor,
On Sept, 30 a group of 12
CarePartners Nurses will join
the Stratford Rotary Club: and
travel to Peru on a medical aid
trip.

Our trip will involve 10
days providing clinics to
remote villages on the
Amazon and we will be treat-
ing patients of all ages with a.
variety of illnesses. We are.
asking for donations to help
purchase medications` and
supplies that are needed to
take with us. Several drug
companies are supporting this
work and will provide us with
$10 worth of drugs for every
$1 we raise. We are also col-
lecting shampoo, soap, tooth-
paste, toothbrushes, sunglass-
es and old prescription eye-
glasses. These items will be
handed out to those who come
to the clinic for treatment.
