Located just off of Hwy. 86 on Kintail Line, Simpson and her family started up the market because : there was a detour ' from Hwy. 21 that went by - the Simpson home, so they. decided since they had such, a bumper crop of sweet. corn, they would sell it. The idea of the market devel- oped evel- o ped from there. "1 had just sold day care and I TI1 Distribut the LakeHuri4:.IiiF Wiartonsouth . "The market seemed to work out well. It allowed .me to be at home and work with my kids dur- ing the summer months." The market. has always had a large varietyof produce from sweet corn, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, toma- toes, swiss chard, onions, carrots, beats and the list goes on. The market this year r has , also expanded _ a little in the form of maple syrup, made in the bush by Tracey's Y .. daughter Kenzie. Baked goods have also been added to the market just for something extra. The idea for .the baked goods came from Tracey's husband Steve who has fond Memories of homemade • baked goods. "It was my hus- band's idea for the baked goods because he grew up on a nearby farm," said Simpson. "His sis- ter used to make baked goods and take them down to the .MacKenzie trailer park for all of the campers." Buying local and especially buying local pro duce is- starting to be a. popular trend as people look to support the local economy and at the "same time a healthier diet. "I thinkeo le •. P P like fresh local produce . as opposed. , to out of -country or out of province pro- :duce, said Simpson. I think it's _ kid of like how Knechtels has just gone inde- pendent ;and they are . now ,getting local food. They know it's fresh and picked fresh everyday." A big thing for Simpson is the ability to work closely with her family and it's not just her market, but a family group effort for the past four years. That's the reason why the money the market makes goes towards her kids. "All of the money that we snake from the -market goes into a trust fund," said Simpson. "So it's a win win situa- tion - for my kids' education." Adding a wide variety of produce has always . been something Simpson and her family have tried to provide because a lot of the visitors they get are from all around and Simpson believes that adding that variety will give local people and tourists : alike a - better appreciation of the area. "Every year I try and add some kind of new veg- etable because a 1pt of the people that come by are from the MacKenzie trailer park," , said Simpson. "They come from areas l i k e Kitchener/Waterlo o, so they are used to going to places like the St. Jacobs :Market. We are just trying to broaden the vari- ety of what these people can get in Lucknow." One of the inter- esting things that. the Simpson mar- ket : offers is the honour system. They provide all of ' the food . avail- able on .a list- and people can drop by : the marke, pick up their food and. drop off their money. For the Simpson family -is just: goes to show ; the : type of honesty and friendly atmos- phere Lucknow. area provides on _ a daily basis.
