ACW council finalizes bylaw committee
BY DENNY SCOTT
Signal -Star Staff
Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh Twp. Council has
finalized the committee that
will debate infringements
upon Bylaw 30-2009, the
Property Standards Bylaw.
The group of five members
is composed of two council
members; Councillor Barry
Millim and Reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek, and three mem-
bers of the community at
large .Ken Bos, Sally
McCullen and Chris Basden.
Bos became the last mem-
ber after ACW received and
approved his letter of intent
during their July 22 meeting.
The group will deal with
any matters in which a
landowner feels the bylaw is
not being implemented prop-
erly, and act as the last line
before an issue is taken to
court.
Livestock claim
Vicki Culbert • of Ashfield
Ward will be reimbursed by
Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh Township council
for 20 chickens and seven
turkeys that: were killed by
unidentified dogs.
As the predator isn't a wild
animal, such as . a coyote or
wolf, the province does . not
cover losses, 'however ACW
has decided to approve
Animal Control Officer
Robert Trick's assessment, and
pay out a total of $487.50 to
cover the loss of the animals.
Galt Place storm sewer
Bruins= Excavating was
awarded the contract to com-
mence work on the Galt Place
storm sewer in Century
Heights , by Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh
Township Council.
A new pipe will be installed
between the paved gutter and
the property line with the.
hopes a preventing water
from running on to the road.
Building permits
Despite a slow start to the
year, building permits have
risen to the level they were at
last year in Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh.
According to Chief
Building Official ,dirk
Livingston, who debriefed
ACW council on the topic,
building permits have steadily
increased, bringing them m to
roughly the same level as last
year.
"It was a slow start, but the
numbers have been going up,"
Livingston said.
Dungannon Fall Fair
The Dungannon
Agricultural Society is prepar-
ing to host the Dungannon
Fair on August 7, 8 and 9 at
the Dungannon Agricultural
Fair Grounds.
Events include a truck pull,
modified lawn mower pull,
horse pull, open air dance,
family dance, kids games,
clowns, a baby show and beer
gardens.
Ashfield -Colborne=
Wawanosh council was pre
pared for the event, having
written a $400 donation into
their budget this year to help
the society put together the
event.
Alzheimer Society: starting annual donation drive
The Alzheimer
Society of' Grey -
Bruce continues to
face a : significant
challenge as the
need for informa-
tion, education,
support and coun-
selling services is
growing faster than
the chapter's fman-
ial resources.
"We continue to
depend very much
on the generosity
of the Grey -Bruce
community," said
executive director
Deborah Barker.
The chapter has
just launched its
annual request for
donations with a
mailing to past
donors seeking- sup-
port again in 2009.

Barker explained
that in thepast two
years a number of
outreach programs
have been devel-
oped to encourage
earlier diagnosis
for those affected

services.
There are 2,500
'adults age 65 and
older in Grey -
Bruce who have
been diagnosed
with Alzheimer's
disease or a related
disorder, Barker.
said. However, it is
also known that up
to 65 per cent of
those experiencing
memory loss or
cognitive impair-
ment do not seek a
diagnosis.
"That means the
true number of
those affected
exceeds 7,000,"
said Barker. "We
know that earlier
involvement with
the Alzheimer
Society programs
by an individual
and his or her fam-
ily members and
caregivers means a
better understand-
ing and a better
quality of life
through the disease
process."
One of- the great
successes of
Alzheimer Society
awareness activi-
ties in recent years
has been a reduc-
tion in the stigma •
attached to
Alzheimer's dis-
ease.
"People are more
open :to recogniz-
ing the early signs,
more g to talk
about Alzheimer's
disease and related
dementia, and
more willing to
contact our support`
staff," said Barker.
"Caregivers are
always telling us
how important our
education and
counselling pro-
grams have been
for them and for
their loved ones.
"We are very
proud of the fact
that we have never
had to create a
waiting list for our
support and coun-
selling services.
That has only been
possible because
our donors have
• understood the
need and respond-
ed with generosi-
ty," said Barker.
"We are confident
that our donors will
continue to support
our growing finan-
cial requirements."
Less than 45 per

ernment or other

"We still depend
on our donors to
ensure that all of
our services will
continue to be
available when
they are needed,"
said Barker. •

"When you make

of Grey -Bruce you
are helping to make
a real difference in
the lives of people
