Some big decisions
will be made for the
future of Steelback
Breweries after 35
employees were let go
recently.
Brewery owner
Jonathon Sherman said
sales have not kept pace
with what the company
was hoping.
"It was a tough and
difficult decision, but at
the end of the .: day it's
about ' the business end
and we're not prof-
itable," said Sherman.
"We have to be careful
where we spend every
dollar we have."
The announcement
that employees were
suddenly jobless and the
company is considering
all its options came as a
shock to the community.
However, Sherman said
he is hopeful employees
will return.
"We're not
down and out,
"We're considering all
our alternatives right
now."
Steelback is currently
in a scale -down mode"
until all options are con-
sidered including devel-
oping in another coin
inunmty.
Steelback is a great

company with a great
quality product, but we
have to consider all
strategic options and
consider alternatives,"
he said.
The controversy over
the Tiverton Reunion not
supporting Steelback has
played - a factor in the
future of the brewery
since one, of its main
focuses is to :build a
company through local
support.
"The Tiverton
Reunion was certainly a
factor, but not the only
one," said Sherman.
As a business owner,
he said ,the has "invested
millions of dollars by
supporting fundraising
events, charitable organ-
izations and employ-
ment.
"We just got caught in
a bad situation," he said.
"It looks bad for the
company when our own
community doesn't sup-
port us."
Instead of choosing to
offer Steelback beer at
the reunion, the commit-
tee decided to offer a dif-
ferent brand.
As for ( the future of
Steelback, : Sherman said
they are considering all
alternatives with "a num-
ber of .options. ,.
