BY ELYSE DEBRUYN Kincardine News Staff Some big decisions will be made for the future of Steelback Breweries after 35 employees were let go recently. Brewery owner Jonathon Sherman said sales have not kept pace with what the company was hoping. "It was a tough and difficult decision, but at the end of the .: day it's about ' the business end and we're not prof- itable," said Sherman. "We have to be careful where we spend every dollar we have." The announcement that employees were suddenly jobless and the company is considering all its options came as a shock to the community. However, Sherman said he is hopeful employees will return. "We're not down and out, "We're considering all our alternatives right now." Steelback is currently in a scale -down mode" until all options are con- sidered including devel- oping in another coin inunmty. The controversy over the Tiverton Reunion not supporting Steelback has played - a factor in the future of the brewery since one, of its main focuses is to :build a company through local support. "The Tiverton Reunion was certainly a factor, but not the only one," said Sherman. As a business owner, he said ,the has "invested millions of dollars by supporting fundraising events, charitable organ- izations and employ- ment. "We just got caught in a bad situation," he said. "It looks bad for the company when our own community doesn't sup- port us." Instead of choosing to offer Steelback beer at the reunion, the commit- tee decided to offer a dif- ferent brand. As for ( the future of Steelback, : Sherman said they are considering all alternatives with "a num- ber of .options. ,.
