"Pure chaOs",
how Bruce' County
EMS's deputy chief
described a typical.
scene during an
emergency, similar
to the mock disaster
set up in Kincardine
last week.
Student's from the
fourth annual
MedQUEST
Health Careers
Exploration Camp
were the 'victims' of
a shop class 'explo-
sion' at the former
Westario Power
building on Queen
Street July 8.

nario.
"It's typical of
what we might see
on a day-to-day
basis," •said
Padfield, Bruce
EMS deputy -chief
paramedic. and
Kincardine fire -
fighter. "Multiple
patients isn't that
usual, but it's a
good refresher. It's
nice to have the
opportunity
lice this types of sit-
uations:" •
Aside from a
trainirig experience
emergency
w• orkers, the main
purpose of the
event was to give
MedQUEST
campers a first
hand look at how
emergency services
work together at the
scene of an emer-
gency. Many other
students had the
chance to job shad -
sow paramedics dur-
ing' the scenario.
• Emergency
responders, from
paramedics to the
Kincardine and
Tiverton fire
departments,
weren't briefed on
the situation prior
to their arrival at the
scene to add to the
realism of their
response. Upon
arrival, firefighters
had to deal with
"walkhig wound-
ed," or students suf-
tering from smoke
inhalation and
minor injuries as
they cried fpr help.
A vehicle was
'ablaze' near the
building as it refu-
eled, with a victim
on the ground 'not
breathing and with=-
out a pulse'.
The main part of
the scenario fea-
tured • students
injured, varying in
severity, from a boy
without vital signs
and covered in sec-
ond and third
degree burns, to
students with debris
sticking out of their
arms, broken
bones, • cuts and
bruises, to those
who were 'uncon-
scious.'
Padfield said
since their initial
mock disaster, the
emergency services
were able to clear
the scene in about
half the time, 35
minutes down from
one hour.

tim' Jared Kerr of Mildmay 'suffered' second and third degree
bums in the *shop class explosion' scenario played out as part
of the fourth annual MedQUEST mock disaster. Kincardine
firefighter Grant Robinson holds Kerr's head while he waits for
paramedics to arrive during the scenario.
