Dykstra throwing hat
in the ring for warden
BY CHERYL HEATH
Clinton News -Record Staff
Central Huron Reeve Bert.
Dykstra is throwing his hat
into the ring to vie for the
Huron County warden's seat
in the 2010 term.
County Warden Ken Oke
delivered that news July 15,
during county council's
monthly session.
Morris-Turnberry Mayor
Dorothy Kelly has also
announced her intention to
seek the spot.
"Good luck to both," said
Oke.
Blueprint meetings
Larry Adams, Chief
Administrative Officer for
Huron County, is encourag-
ing county councillors to
attend any one or all of a
series of information meet-
ings'organized by the South
West Local Health
Integration : Network
(LHIN) The meetings are
designed to allow the gener-
al public to give its input
into the organization's long-
term plans for its member
hospitals.
Two nearby sessions are
set to run from 7 p.m. till 9
p.m., July 23, at the Seaforth
and District Community
Centre, located at 122 Duke
St., and . Sept. 16, at the
Knights of Columbus Hall,
390 Parsons Court in
Goderich.
Adams notes the Huron
Perth Healthcare Alliance,..
which .recently announced.
operations will be reviewed
fora its member hospitals; in
Seaforth, Clinton, Stratford
and St. Mary's, will also
.soon be holding its own
round 'of public -consultation
meetings on . yet -to -be
announced dates.
Rebels Without Funding
Councillors learned. the
tobacco -prevention group,
Rebels With a Cause, will
disband after this summer
due to a cut in provincial -
government funding.
Coun. Ben Van
Diepenbeek (Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh) asked
how much money was
involved in the Huron
County Health Unit -operat-
ed program. He learned it
costs $115,000.
"It's unfortunate that. it
will be cut but that's the way
things are," says County
Warden Ken Oke.
Donation on hold
Coun. Ben Van
Diepenbeek (ACW) learned
a Port Albert man's request
for a display room for his
collection of Port Albert air-
force base memorabilia can't
be met.
In noting the potential
donor has been approached
by Bruce County, ~Van
Diepenbeek asked . Beth
Ross, the county's cultural-
services director, whether a
permanent -display room
could be found as per .the
man's request.
"It's definitely Huron
County . heritage that he has
there," he adds.
Ross notes such a request
cannot be met for any dona-
tion due to the space limita-
tions that : Huron County's
cultural services department
is grappling with.
"I'm surprised Bruce
County. would accept it. It
doesn't fall within their man-
date at all," she says.
Ross adds the . county is
undergoing a facilities study
for storage with the hope
that more space is found ` to
accommodate the many gen-
erous donations being made
to the county on a regular
basis.
Coun. Deb Shewfelt
(Goderich) suggests there`.
may be space available for
'these artifacts at Sky
Harbour. Ross pledged to
follow up on that suggestion.
Van Diepenbeek says Sky
Harbour would be an ideal
spot for the . collection.
"Either that or this collec-
tion will get lost eventually,"
he says. "1 don't think you
can keep putting the gentle-
man off forever."
Council also agreed to fur-
ther investigate the possibil-
ity of an addition to Sky
Harbour at its next commit-
tee -of -the -whole session as
per the suggestion of Coun.
Bert Dykstra (Central
Huron).

Human resources manager
Darcy Michaud reports the
county's .senior -management
team is looking at a new
attendance -management pro-
gram for county staff. It is
also revamping its sick -days
policy.
The goal is to have the
new programs in place by
2010, says Michaud.
