Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - Page 9 Aines Bootblack Orator at Blyth Festival a To celebrate the 35th season of the Blyth Festival, Mitchell native Ted Johns returns with his wife Janet Amos to perform his new comedy The Bootblack Orator. As Blyth's most prolific play- wright, Mr. Johns is best known for He Won't Come In From The Barn, Garrison's Garage, Country Hearts, and Naked on the North Shore. His new play was inspired by John R. Clarke who toured Huron County in 1886 entertaining peo- ple with jokes and homilies while presenting illus- trated lectures with a magic lantern. Clarke called himself the Bootblack Orator. Rev. John Grayof Clinton who also toured at this time, called him- self the Sledgehammer Orator. Using newspa- per excerpts from the time, the play recreates an evening in 1886. Canada was not quite 20 -years - old. Sixty years previous there was one settler in all the lands west of Guelph. His name was_- Sabestian Fryfogel. In 1886 Blyth boasted eight trains a day and had seven taverns. Rather than ban pigs and cows from the streets, council proposed a law . requiring everyone build a picket fence. The scourge of drinking was attacked by Bootblack in his lecture The Moral Heroism of the Temperance Movement. Other . lectures were entitled, Representative Canadians, To and Fro in London, Famous Boys and Girls, and Hits and Misses (apparently an evening of jokes). While Johns takes . on the title role and his wife, nominated actress and former artistic director Janet Amos also assumes four other: roles rang- ing from the eld- erly Witch of Marnoch to 17- year-old 7-year-old Susie Twentycents. The magic lantern is enhanced by mod- ern computer effects to create a stunning , sound and light show and the frequent costume and mood changes make the evening play like the wind. "A 'two fisted triumph" says Robert Reid of the Kitchener:;. Waterloo Record. "Takes us into the heart of an era," says , Kathy Rumleski of the London Free press. The play has been running since June 24 and will end on Aug. 15. For mor ein- formation call the Blyth' Festival at 519-523-9300 or 1-877;862-5984. You can also email to info@blythfesti- val.com.
