For parents, there is not much to surviving the
last days of school unless of course your child
does something ludicrous .like win a school
award. This may result in you having to attend
the end of the year Awards Ceremony.
First of all, the ceremony will be held in the
gymnasium. If you have never been in an ele-
mentary school gymnasium for an assembly,
picture the inside of a Betty Crocker oven,
only smaller and a bit stuffier. Parents will be
seated at the back, followed by thirty or forty
grade eights who will be each generating
enough body heat to power their own
sauna. The remainder of the school
population will be: filling in the space
between the grade. eights _and the front
row. There are two, doors to every gym-
nasium and they will be conveniently located as
far away from you as possible.
The ceremony goes something like this:
8:45 (22°C) - You show.- up early because you
wantto get a good sat. As you sit on the hard
plastic chair for the next 15 minutes, you wander:
"Why DID I want a "good" sear?"
9:02 -On these chairs you knew your back would
be okay for a few minutes. Time is up.
9:03 -The :ceremony begins.
9:04 (24°C) - Everyone around you smells hot.
You try to remember if you put deodorant on. •
:9:10 (25°C) The principal has introduced and
welcomed everyone. You keep reminding yourself
that the ceremony is only for an hour.
9:28 (32°C) - You discover as you look around
that there are windows lining the top of the gym-
nasium walls. They are closed. You try to open
them using The Force. It doesn't work and
your wife asks you if you have gas.
9:39 (34°C) - You have gone from frown-
ing at the kids who are goofing off to mak-
ing subtle gestures in order to make them
laugh. The other parents are now frowning at
you.
9:41 (36°C) - There is NO com-
fortable way to sit in your chair. You
alternate between sitting bolt
upright and leaning over. Your wife.
asks you if you have gas. '
9:48 (37°C) - In order to stretch
things out, teachers have now started inventing
new awards:. The 'I'm Honest' Award; the -
Dressed Myself' .;'ward and the 'Dental Hygiene'
Award. You are sure that, -in the grand scheme of
things, you are being punished for something.
9:53 (39°C) - Sweat is pooling in your left shoe.
This doesn't bother you as your left leg fell asleep
ages ago. Your wife tells you to quit leaning on
her but you can't, as your spine just evaporated.
10:02 (42°C) - Your wife carries you out and
puts you in the van, promising you, will never
have to do this with her again.

"Making music is a life-
long passion that I can't

"My music is the story of
my life."
Marking her tenth year
as an artist, her new
album "Unmistakable"
comes straight from the
heart. Her most popular

radio singles, numerous
awards and an . interna-

create the female trio Lace
and she has released a
series of successful solo
albums, including
"Moody Blue," which
yielded both a number
one song and a number
one video for the single,
"The First Pay You Wake
up Alone."
Today, Beverley is back
in Nashville, the country
music capital of the world
and is continuing to blaze
trial not only for inde-
pendent Canadian artists,
but for women in general.
Working with Chris
Farren, a producer from
her earlier Lace CD,
Mahood is looking for -
ward to touring,patfam-
