HomeMy WebLinkAboutLucknow Sentinel, 2009-07-08, Page 3Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, July 8, 2009 - Page '3 Lucknowites holding fund-raiser for breast cancer research Andrea Andrew and Carolyn Andrew, of Lucknow are taking great strides to aid those affected by cancer by participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Hospital. They will join thousands of other courageous and commit- ted women and men on Sept. 12-13, in a two-day, 60 kilometre walk through various neighborhoods in Toronto to raise funds for burst cancer research 'bus is the seventh annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk in Toronto. This multi -day event is a chance to discover what it is to be it hem in the fight against breast cancer. Thousands of walkers will cover approximately 30 kilometers each day, trav- eling at their own pace. Walkers will be sup- ported by hundreds eds of volunteers and crew members who will provide meals, wat+sr and snack stops, gear transport, : _ rest - rooms safety on the streets, comprehensive medical services and an overnight campsite complete with tents and hot showers. On July 11 Andrea and Carolyn will be hosting a fundraiser on the main street in front of the Sentinel between 12 - 4ap.m. Everyone is welcome to come by and find out more about their upcoming challenge. A special drank you to Jeff ` and Eric Taylor for the use of their building for Reunion Central and to The Lucknow' Sentinel for such excellent coverage and Joey Legrand for being our long-distance webamaster. This reunion, we were able to access three different government grants as well. Trillium Foundation assist- ed with the costs of publishing "Lucknow- a Place We Call Home". The money from this fund was intended to keep the cost of the book affordable to all. Canadian Arts Heritage granted us $8,000 towards the cost of provid- ing local entertain- ment and to cover the costs of the venues, advertis- ing, etc. It was thanks to a .$3,300 Job Creation grant through Service Canada that we were able to staff Reunion Central and have it open the weeks prior:to. and immediately after the reunion.: As well, Steelback Brewery spon- sored our event to the tune of $8,000.. Some of the donations already made by the com- mittee for work done at the reunion - The, Almost Famous People Players will be receivinga dona- tion of • $200 ' for their part in l the Sunday afternoon �. concert. The Bruce County Museum was granted $500 for the display all weekend at ` . the arena . - a plaque has been placed in the museum, on. behalf of Lucknow :s 150th. Lucknow Guiding provided a display as well and received a dona- tion of $100 for being museum guides. The Canadian Mental Health Association was given $200 for providing the life- size puppet show on Sunday in the children's area and HAWK Theatre $100 for their work in organizing the walking tour. The committee has also set aside $5,000 for mural . touch-ups and start 1 i � up money for. next reunion. Many of the e : service clubs i .volved also received money from the events that they hos which are not counted in statement. Some of details that may be of interest, and the. most commonly asked: the fire- works display (yes. they WERE fan- tastic) : cost $10,000. Security costs were $18,562: This reunion executive chose to offer low cost eventsthat covered all ages..(the dance tickets this year were : the same price as in 1998) and, from the feed- back we: received, we accomplished this goal For one of the reports, we. were asked how many volunteer man hours were provid- ed to this event...... what a question! The nine -member group is riding the wave of local -food popularity - the 100-milediet and knowing where food products come from, and the co-op is a way of reacting to local demand and markets in a more effective, efficient way. Stores are buying local chicken, pork and beef. Produce will continue to come from local venues like the Elmira Produce Market. The co-op deals directly with area farmers and markets to get product to stores quickly to maintain freshness. The same idea is behkid Terminal - product is deilveretback to the stores without warehous- ing to ensure product freshness..
