Lucknow residents -.giant hogweed gone
"It's been there for
years. It wasn't very big
to start with, but now it's
just out of control," said
Doug Raynard. "This year
the hogweed has really
spread out.
For the Raynard it's an
eyesore and it's taking
over the natural foliage,
but what they are really
concerned with are the
hazardous health effects
hogweed can have on
people.

Doug and Mary Lou
Raynard of Havelock
Street are upset that the
giant hogweed near their
home hasn't been
removed by the munici-
pality of Huron -Kinloss
yet. Contact with the
plant's sap can potentially
cause serious health
effects.
The Raynards have
been aware of the its
growth for some time now
and have been calling the
municipality and the
Bruce County Weed
inspector for the past few
months to come and take
care of the problem. They
were told by Mike Fair,
director of facilities and
recreation for Huron -
Kinloss that in 'his opin-
ion, it wasn't needed at
that time.
With new legislation for
weed control, it doesn't
allow for people to be
trained on the job and at
this time Fair is the only
employee that is licensed
to take care of noxious
weeds, which is how giant
hogweed is classified..
"We are doing our best
and we do need to get it
done," said Fair. "I'll have
to hire a commercial
sprayer to come and do
the spraying because I
don't have the time to do
the work myself."
Fair did say that the
weeds would be taken
care of in the third week
of. July.
The Raynards believe it
would have been an
opportune time to take
care of the weed problem
when the growing season
started a few months ago.
Now they feel the weeds
are out of control. For
anyone who has seen the
hogweed just off of
Havelock Street it has
taken over a huge patch of
land.
