Trinity Church celebrates 140th
On May 24
Trinity United
Church (originally
Hackett's) : cele-
brated their 140th
anniversary.
Approximately
175 members and
guests filled the
auditorium and
basement where a
sound system had
been installed. A
beautiful flower
arrangement in
memory of our
forefathers and
past members sat
on the communion
table in front of
the pulpit.
William Irvin,
the ' clerk of ses-
sion welcomed
everyone and
drew. attention to
the cross that was
on the wall behind
the pulpit. He stat-
ed that cross was
made from the
railings of Blake's
and Zion
Churches when
they closed. He
also mentioned
that the wall hang-
ing at the front of
the • church depict-
ing Blake's, Zion
and Hackett's
churches was
made by Ruth
Alton and Sharon
Nivins.. Jim and
Isobel Hunter, the
oldest couple
attending - Trinity,
then came up and
lit the Christ
Candle.
Two. duets were
played by Wilma
Blake on the vio-
lin and . Lori
Melitzer (Hackett)
on the accordion.
Mary Anne Alton
from Toronto also
sang two solos. •
All three ladies
once attended
(Hackett's
Trinity) Church.
There was also a ,
number . by the
Trinity choir and
Anne Andrew read
two Scriptures.
The guest
speaker was
Pastor Gordon
alton from. Erb St.
Mennonite
Church in
Kitchener. For the
children's story he
related many
memories he had
while attending
Trinity. He
remembered
learning the cate-
chisms and receiv-
ing seals for per-
fect attendance;
the Christmas
Concerts in the
church basement
and the annual
Sunday School
picnics down at
the lake and later
at Brookside
Public School. He
told ' the story of
when the church
was hit by light-
ning on Pentecost
Sunday leaving a
holein the ceiling
right .above a S.S.
class, fortunately
no one was
injured. He also
mentioned that
five generations of
Altons attended
this church start-
ing with his great,
great grandfather.
He also said that community.
Trinity Church as .i. .. -- r ma me m ma am um mu
laid the base for
him to go into the I
ministry. It's also
interesting to note
have experienced
the support of the
church through
the trials of their
lives and also in
happy _ times.
Gordon thanked
the Trinity com-
munity for . the
support they gave
him and his family
through the sick-
ness and death of
his two brothers.
He mentioned the
world is changing
and so has the
church changed
since biblical
times. In order to
stay relative to
today's world it's
important that
everyone build
bridges and . not
walls and
approach difficult
situations with an
open mind. The
church has, to
work. with family
issues that are
changing the
world and the

the service
William Irvin
thanked everyone
for coming and for

make this a very

anniversary. He
also said a special
thank you to all
who took part in
the . service. He
then invited
everyone to come
over to Brookside
Public School for
a luncheon and a
social time.
At Brookside.
School close to
130 sat down to a
smorgasbord
lunch of sand-
wiches, squares,
relishe_ s and two
140th anniversary
cakes. On the
walls were many
photos on bristol
board depicting
different divisions
of the church's
past. The collec-
tion included pho-
tos of past minis-
ters, UCW activi-
ties, junior and
senior choirs,
Sunday - School
special events and
many more photos
relating to the past
of Trinity Church.
There were also
two tables of past
memorabilia that
included old
financial_ state-
ments, one dating
back to 1927.
There was also a
stone plate saved
from Blake's
church .when it
was taken down.
Inscribed on the
stone was when
the church was
built in 1892 and
the church's name.
During and after
lunch everyone
reminisced with
friends, many they
had not seen in
years. It was an.
anniversary that
will always be.
remembered.
that six genera-
tions of Hacketts
have attended this
church as well.
The title of
Gordon's message
was Celebrating
the Church and
Re -imagining its
Future. He men-
tioned that in for-
mer years the
church was the
central meeting
place in the com-
muhity. Today
through many
opportunities to
advance and
improve their
lives and their
careers, many of
our young people
go to the cities or
travel abroad
while others get
involved in sports
and other commit-
ments. We live in
a changing world
and church atten-
dance is dropping,
even in Gordon's
church in
Kitchener. Many
people wilo were
at the anniversary
