Good news for Point Clark Lighthouse
BY GARff REID
Sentinel Staff
Huron -Kinloss
Twp. council
received some
good news at the
June 1 council
meeting about the
status of the 150th
anniversary of the
Point Clark
Lighthouse.
The good news
being the Friends
of the Point Clark
Lighthouse will be
getting $20,300
for the anniversary
event that will take
place from Aug.
14-16. The money
will allow for a
full weekend of
events.
There was some
concern about the
lighthouse itself,
as the perimeter of
the tower has a
problem with
pieces of it chip-
ping and breaking
off.
Parks Canada
who owns the
lighthouse has had
an' engineer install
a fence around the
perimeter due to
the falling rock.
"There's a big
panic right now,"
said Mike Fair,
director of facili-
ties and recreation
for Huron -Kinloss
Twp. "We operate
the lighthouse as a
museum and we
give tours through-
out the summer.
Now, we are trying
to plan a way of
. protecting the visi-
tors from falling
rock."
A protection
system will be
installed for the
operating season
of the lighthouse.
A cost estimate,
plan and remedial
measures will be
completed.
"Parks Canada is
putting together a
business plan with
funds to repair the
structure," said
Fair. "A protection
system will be
installed for the
operating season
of the tower and
Parks Canada is
aware of the 150th
celebration,"
