Bruce County cracking down on housing
BY PAT HALPIN
Special to tbe Sentinel
Bruce County is cracking down on prob-
lems in a social housing building it owns in
Port Elgin. .
The housing authority has held one
meeting with police and social agencies in
response to trouble plaguing the 32 -unit
adult building, said manager Susan Earle.
"Some people are afraid to live in the
building," Earle said.
"There's vandalism, we suspect some
drug problems there, noise problems, the
police have been involved, conflicts
between tenants, there's been a variety of
things?"
The county housing authority will tight-
en up security by locking common areas
and possibly installing surveillance cam-
eras.
"We want people to feel safe in our
buildings. That's the number one thing,"
Earle said. But' fixing the cause of prob-
lems means involving tenants in the solu-
tion, she told the county housing commit-
tee.
"What We're going to do is try to
increase security in the building, and then
look at social work — some kind of coun-
seling — and try to tap into all the social
agencies that are available for people to try
and help." F.,arle indicated social workers,
addiction coUnseling, Community Living
and possibly mental health agencies are all
willing to work with residents to resolve
problems that are causing conflict
