Can Penguins win the Cup this year?
Once again it's Sid 'the kid' Crosby
and the Pittsburgh Penguins against the
big red machine of the Detroit Red
Wings in the Stanley Cup finals. A lot of
people, including myself, are wonder-
ing if it's going to be the same steamroll
of a series by the Red wings or has a
year of experience allowed the
Penguins to become a better team?
From what I've seen so far in the
playoff, is that yes, the Pens are a
much better team than last year..
Evgeni Malkin has grown into
player he's supposed to be and
he and Crosby sit on top of the
playoff scoring leader board.
They seem to be an unstop
gable force right now and
:with a hot goalie in Marc -Andre
Fleury, the Pens have a strong air= .
on taking the Cup home. .
It will be something Detroit will have
to shut down and it's something they
have prided themselves on over the last
20 years, being one of the best if not the
best franchises in that time period. •
Detroit has a knack in shutting down
good offences by packing a punch with.
an offensive punch:. of their own.
Players like. Johan Franzen, Henrik
Zetterberg have been on fire intim play-
offs and if Hatt Trophy contender Pavel
Datsyuk can get things going, the Red
Wings will be a formidable force to deal.
with. Detroit will also rely on the team
leading skills of Nicklas Lidstrom.
One thing I want is a long, hard
fought series. I know both teams are
hungry for the Cup and they have the
talent to win, but I just want to see it go
all the way to a seventh game.
This series being a rematch of last
year,' it just makes the drama that much
better. The poster boy of the NHL,
Crosby versus one of the best
team's in the last two decades.
What the series reminds Me of,
even though 1 was a very ` yo ng
lad, is the battle between the
New York Islanders and the
Edinonton Oiien of the early
and mid -eighties.
The Islanders were the best
team at the time having won
four Cups in a row from 198°-
1983.
. The battle is so .reminiscent of f t
battle the Oilers .the Islanders
•to the 1983 and 1984 :Stamey Cup
Finals. The Is .. won d '83 sines
es
with ease, just like the Red wings won
their series in last year against the
Penguins.
In 1984 it was a 'S *Nvith
the Young Oilers taking the Culp 'and -yes
there, is again the .comparison of the
-then pang Wayne Gretzky leading his
teach to victory. MU it be the young
Sidney Crosby leading his Penguins
sgirad to the holy grail . of hockey this
year?
Only time will tell.
