ACW council deem a Hwy. 21 bridge unsafe
BY DENNY
• SCOT
Signal -Star Staff
A nearly Century -
old bridge on
Laurier Line, just
off Hwy 21, has
been deemed
unsafe for traffic by
Ashfield -Colborne-
Wawanosh council.
. According to a
report made by
B.M. Ross the
bridge's supports
are developing a
lean, and their foot-
ings are being
washed away by
the current of the
18 Mile River. • •
- The report was
commissioned by
Public Works
Superintendent,
Brian Van Osch.
During a routine
inspection, Van
Osch noticed a
washout near the
bridge, and, upon
inspecting it, he
discovered several
problems with the
bridge, including
Y
ctseks • large
enough to fit a hand
into, shifted sup-
ports, and founda-
tion walls eroding.
According to
B.M. Ross' report,
the bridge is
unsafe, and needs
to have work done
`on it before any
other traffic can use
it. -
"There is a
potential that [the
supports] can move
again, without
notice, and cause a
collapse of the
bridge," the engi-
neering company
explained in a letter
to council.
The bridge,
which` 'spans 36
meters, and is
roughly 14 meters
above the water
was built : in 1920,
according toan on-
site.plaque.•
Reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek
explained that
while the bridge
may be repairable,
any sizable invest-
ment will most
likely be a long
time coming.
"Until we do an
assessment of what
we . can do, and
what we can do to
fix the problem, the
bridge will remain
closed indefinitely
until finances
become available
to replace it."
The bridge is a
low -priority job,
due to the fact that
it doesn't land -lock
anyone and it can
easily be bypassed.
Wyle tie werp
no exact fid for
the price of replac-
ing or repairing the
bridge, Van Osch
estimated that it
would be well over
one million dollars,
possibly closer to
two.
A. forthcoming
report -from B.M.
Ross [ regarding the
repair or replace-
ment of the bridge
will help ACW
council determine
what the future of
the bridge will be.
