Bruce County
budget gets final
stamp of approval
BY PAT HALPIN
Special to the Sentinel
Bruce County's ; budget
has . the final stamp of
approval from council.
The May 7 vote didn't
include any discussion
this time around, but
council spent a special
session last month comb-
ing over new spending
andreserve funds.
Formal budget approval
that wasexpected at the
April 2 meeting got side-
lined when councillors
asked department heads to
give them a clearer picture
of proposed new spend-
ing. The impact of 10 new
staff - three hired with
pre -budget approval and
seven more coming on
stream: by December - is
one .area where council-
lors wanted more
answers.
The 2.7 per cent tax rate
hike this year is close to
the cost of living increase,
said Warden Bill Goetz,
but he's still worried about
the nearly $700,000
impact of 10 new jobs
included in the overall
budget.
"I -still have a concern
about that, that it's going
to come back to haunt us
next year," Goetz said.
"For the time being. I
guess we better carry, on..
The budget was passed so
now it's our responsibiiity
to make it work."
In all, the Bruce county
budget will raise $33.5
million through property
tax.
Grey Bruce line
The next stage of work
on the Grey Bruce county
line highway project is
ready to go.
A Chesley construction
company has the contract
to do the section north
from the Scone Bridge.
Wayne Schwartz was
the lowest of four bidders
at $1.6 million.
The Grey Bruce county
line project has . been
underway for more than
three years. It involves
rebuilding a 26 km stretch
of highway from just out-
side Chesley north to
Highway 21.
Bruce and Grey county
highways are rebuilding
the . heavily -travelled •
county line with infra-
structure funding. The
goal is to create a corridor
from Clifford to
Tobermory.
211 launch
Bruce county residents
can get all their questions
about community and
social services answered
at one phone number.
211 was officially
launched at the Bruce
County council. chambers
on May 7. The free phone
number allows residents
to find government and
social services, get help
with government forms,
or find out who can solve
your . non -emergency
problem.
United Way: of Bruce
and Grey.- has been push-
ing for 211, service . for
several yea's, as a way to
get people in need cob.
nected with existing sere-
ices.
The round the clock
service cuts through the
.frustration of finding con-
tacts on websites or phone
numbers in confusing blue
pages, said spokesperson
Pamela Hillier.
