Mother's -.Day is always a reason to go home
Well, Mother's Day was this past
weekend and yes I went home like a
good boy and spent the day with my
mother and family.
I think it's true that family is, the
most important thing in a person's
life. More important than a per-
son's career or social life.
I'm not saying those things
aren't important to shape a 'well;
structured personality, it's fami-
ly
ami-ly that gives one their char-
acter and sense of purpose
in the world.
I' in very privileged that
both of my parents are still
together . in my life because
that is not the same story for a lot of
people, with the divorce rate being
so high, h, but a person doesn't doesn't:need to
g
have the conventional family to feel
loved.
People just have to have the right
people in their lives, to motivate and
give them confidence, so they can
pursue what they want in life. ;
That's probably . why there is a
Mother's Day because it's important
to give thanks back to the person
who gave you life, and made it pos-
sible for you to pursue what you
want in life.
I guess what I'm trying to say is
that ::I better buy a pretty . good
present for Mother's Day. I can
only give flowers so many
times, but seriously I'ni glad
every time I'm : able to : come .•
home and see my family.
One thing certain for me
is I'm aware of how touch 1
miss where I come from
when I've been gone for a
long time.
wanted to write: only
b always
about Mother's Day, but i t ays
reminds me of iii whole family .,Y and
Y
that should never take them for
I
granted.
So I went out for dinner with my
moan andfamilyand it was good
my
to.. just sit and relax and not worry
about anything and be with m : fam-

Mother's Day ism t something to
take for granted....
Next generation of kids is inspiring.
Dear Editor;
Like generations of mothers before
me, i often think that my children are
growing up too • fast, know too much
for their age, and 1 worry about the
•challenges the next generation faces.
However, over the past two weeks, I
have had the opportunity to meet with
groups of young people who truly
inspire me. They have given me. con-
fidence knowink'-that a fantastic group
of future leaders is in our midst.
I met first with two energetic young
women who are passionately raising
money to [ replace the community-
playground -equipment in Auburn.
These young women came prepared
with concrete fundraising ideas, con-
tact information, grant applications,
and a rationale for why the equipment
should be replaced. The best part
about their passion was that it includ-
ed ways to gather the Auburn commu-
nity together. Their first fundraiser
will be a Teen Dance in Auburn, on
May 9. Family movie nights will fol-
low in the summer.
Next, I spent a wet and rainy week-
end camping with 16 Cubs from 1st
Clinton Cub Pack. These kids planted
several hundred trees at two farms,
learning about environmental stew-
ardship projects. They went on to pick
up litter at the town dump. They have
also raised money for the food bank,
learned about poverty in Madagascar,.
and will leatr First Aid skills. These
kids, aged to ::11, are developing.
their social awareness of their com-
munity needs, and are stepping up to
fill that need.:
Finally, I was a judge at the
Einvirothon, where local high-school
students participate in an environmen-
tal conipetition. Not only were these
kids passionate about environmental
protection, they were interested in
stewardship projects, economics, gov-
ernment policy and kgislation devel-
opment. I believe that I will be work-
ing alongside these kids some day,
and I hope that we can channel their
energy and passion to make some
environmental projects happen in the
county and the province.
Whenever you start to wonder what
the future brings, think of these won-
derful young folks who have the ener-
gy and passion to make things happen.
Support their efforts whenever you
can. And maybe we could even learn a
lesson from them and volunteer in our
community to make a differencb for
someone else.
See you (or your teens) at the Teen
Dance in Auburn on May 9!
