Cops for Cancer looking for more volunteers
This year the
Cops for Cancer
event is being held
on Saturday, May
30 at the Lucknow
Legion Branch
#3Q9. In past years
it has been held at
the. gazebo ,at the
arena. However,
now that the -
Legion has a
fenced in patio the
event will be held
there.
The Legion
holds a BBQ from
11 a.m. to .1. pan.
with all donations
going to the
Canadian Cancer
Society. The shave
off will begin at 1
p.m. The Coast
FM radio station
will be there to
emcee the event.
Cops for Cancer
is looking for par-
ticipants to shave
their heads or
donate hair for
wigs. Anyone can
participate. If any-
one is under the
age. of 18 a par-
ent/guardian is
required plus a
signature at the
time of register-
ing.
Hairdressers are
being looked for to
volunteer to do the
shaving. Any stu-
dents . looking for
volunteer hours
can give Trish
Scott a call at 519-
528-3543. they
could *help . with
the BBQ,..registra2
tion, set-up and
clean-up.
Over the past
years the event has
had anywhere
from 6-15 people
-whohave been
,involved in : the
shave off. In 2003
and 2004 head of
the event Trish
Scott was also a
•
participant who
shaved her head.
Scott would like
to see more young
people get
involved for such
a •worthwhile
cause this year as
cancer has affect-
ed so many people
in our community.
Scott is hoping
that there will be
at least five or six
participants.
"As for money I
would .like to gee
raised -- I don't
ever set a goal as 'I
believe that every
little bit helps no
matter how
insignificant," said
Scott. "1 have been
the chairperson for
this event since it
wasfirst held in
May 2003. At that
time I worked for
the Bank of
Montreal and we
took on the proj-
ect. In the summer
of 2000 my dad
was diagnosed
with lung cancer.
In September of
2000 he had sur-
gery to remove his
lung. When I start-
ed as chair of this
event in 2003 my
dad was very sup-
portive and helped
me greatly.
However in the
fall of .2003 his
cancer- returned
'and he passed.
away in January of
2004. I decided
then that I: was
going to continue
as chair perscin of
this event as it is a
cause that I truly
believe : in. Since
starting this event
in 2003 the partic-
ipants
ipants in 'L ucknow
have raised almost
$55,000 for the
Canadian Cancer
Society."
Last year the
event in Lucknow
raised around
$5000. •
Cops for . Cancer
began in the
Bluewater area in
1994. Last year
alone the revenue
from Cops was
$239,376. In the
last 12 years: the
total raised is over
$2 million.
So far there is
one participant,
nine-year-old Josh
Scott. He has not
cut his hair since
last September
when he started
school. Jessyca
Scott has donated
hair twice now for
wigs. Josh is doing
this in memory of
his poppa (Doug
MacDonald).
Scott would like
to ,thank all the
volunteers that
have helped . her
since starting this
. event. Without the
volunteers the
event would not be
the success that it
is.
