They did how- ever set a franchise record for most consecutive times not mak- ing the playoffs: This can't really be blamed on this year's squad because they just didn't have the talent to get by the top teams in their conference. People say they are in a rebuilding phase, which is probably true,. but this year was actually fun to watch. The Leafs in the past three years were frustrating to watch becau s e they did have some talent, but couldn't keep any consistency going. This year's team. with players like Luke Schein', Ian White, Mikhail Grabovski, veteran Jason Blake, etc have had a level of consistent play . over the season. The goaltending wasp t always there with .'Vela Toskala up and down, but if they can get some size and talent in the off season then the Leafs will have a team that can charge into the play- offs. The next logical step is to make the playoffs, which they haven't been able to do for four years and then they can set their eyes on the coveted Stanley Cup. I'm expecting big things from Leafs General Manager Brian Burke, but:I'm also realistic they it will take at least 3-4 years before the Leafs have a possi- bility of becoming cup con- tenders. The players of the Leafs do have the most media scruti- ny in the NHL, but :know- ing the history of .the fran- chise that . should come to no surprise to anyone. The players to la ers have play through: . that and not take anything personal- ly. . They just have to play then I'm a : die hard : Boston Red Sox fans and 'when they won. in 2004 for the first time in 89 years it felt amazing 'and that's exactly how h want to feel :about my • favourite hockey team. i always ( get asked this question from my friends: Would I choose Game 7 of the Leafs' Stanley Cup finals or Game 7 of the Red Sox World Series? I'm Canadian and even though 1 love my Sox, I would take the Leafs every time! I may have gotten a little off track about the Leafs missing the.playoffs this year, but I can't wait for the day when I see the Stanley Cup go over a Leaf player's head. Murray Gaunt will be missed Mrs. Carol Mitchell: It is certainly with great sadness that I stand today to inform the House of a passing away of a truly remarkable man. Murray Gaunt was a man of humble beginnings who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people in Huron -Bruce. He was born in the middle of the Great Depression to farmers, and Murray started his childhood days by. walking two miles to school. At a young age, he became a very keen observer of the technological trans- formation of agriculture. His enthu- siasm for farming grew after the war, when things like the turkey broiler business and new animal husbandry techniques signalled that agriculture was changing. After attending Guelph university, Murray became a poultry fanner and eventually a very popular CKNX farm editor. He was the voice of agriculture until one day he was courted to run . in a provincial by- election for The Liberal Party. Murray spent 18 years as the MPP for Huron -Bruce, and he worked tirelessly to advance the agriculture issues of the riding. In 2005, Murray Gaunt was inducted into • the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame and recognized for his many achievements. But what Murray. was best known for was his unwavering grace and his kindness. He was also a proud father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Pat. Join me in paying respect to this hard-working and compassionate man,Murray Gaunt. The Speaker (Hon. Steve Peters): I'd ask all members and our guests to please rise as we pay. a moment of silence in memory of former mem- ber Murray Gaunt.
