Lighthouse celebrating 150th anniversary
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The Point Clark
Lighthouse will be
150 years old this
year and that is
cause for celebra-
tion as organizers
look to put on fes-
tivities for the
Aug. 15 weekend.
Parks and
Recreation
Supervisor Mike
Fairhas requested
a special grant
from the Canada
Heritage Fund so
that they can go all:
out on the week-
end. He'll be look-
ing to bring bands
for the weekend.
Even if the fund-
ing doesn't come
through, Fair and
company will still
hold the annual
lighthouse event
11
the area has, which
usually consists sof
a corn roast.
"Our plans are
really based on
getting a special
anniversary grant
from% the Canadian
Heritage Fund.
They give grants
to significant
anniversaries like
our 150th," said
Fair. If we get he
funding we'll have
a great three day
weekend. We are
hoping to bring in
bands and more
,entertainment than
our regular annual
event."
The lighthouse's
main attraction is .
its view that looks
out over the water
from Point Clark
and once had a
vital role in navi-
gating sailors
away from the
dangerous shoal
just three km off-
shore.'
Dating • all the
way back to 1859,
the lighthouse is
entrenched in the
history of the area
and its history is
something the area
takes great pride
in
"The, lighthouse
was completed in
1859, which
makes it 150 years
old this year. It's.
quite an attraction.
..e have been pro-
moting this year as
the year of the
light because we
are really proud of
the history and the
tradition of the
lighthouse," said
11 •
Fair.
The lighthouse
is still operational,
which goes to -
show how well the
the lighthouse was
built to be still
standing for 150
years.
Although
acquired by Parks

"We call the
lighthouse the bea-
con ` of tourism for
this area and we
are really proud of
the lighthouse and
we hope if the
funding comes
through :that we'll
have a great three
day weekend C to
commemorate our
little piece of his-
tory," said Fair.
Canada in 1967 to
commemorate the
vital role of light-
houses in naviga-
tion on the. Great
Lakes, it still
serves its. primary
function an aid to
navigation. The
li.ghtkeeper's
dwelling, built at
the same time as
the lighthouse, is
now operated as a
museum by the
Township • of
Huron -Kinloss.
The lighthouse
attracts people
from all over who
want to come and
see a fully func-
tioning lighthouse,
but rolled up into
that is the history
of it and also its
impressive archi-
tecture.
