Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-03-25, Page 5Getting the kids to go to bed is one of the
hardest things a parent has to do at night
When we were a younger, married couple and we
had only one child, I often complained about how
difficult it was to get the little (ahem) man into bed at
the proper time. He was quite excellent at stalling
and very imaginative when it came to distracting me
from my. mission, which was to tuck him in before I
went to bed. "Don't worry," my wife assured me. "It
can only get easier." This would probably have
been true IF AVE HAD ONLY HAD ONE
CHILD.
However, • due to unforeseen circumstances
(my wife attacking me as I slept), .we now have
THREE CHILDREN, two of whom share a
bunkbed.Trust me when I tell you, it has not got-
ten easier. It has only gotten 'different.' Now,
instead of one little voice calling out of a
darkened bedroom for hours on end, we
have TWO little voices arguin , crying,
hollering and calling out for hours on end.
Plus, as an added bonus, both children take
it upon themselves to get OUT of bed and ' tell us
exactly what the other one is up to. This definitely
puts a damper on the of Romantic Night Life (as do
the children themselves). After six or seven 'Visits'
from both parties, I get elected to go and 'Settle'
things.
Me: "Son, why are you out of bed again?"
My Son: "She poured water on my bed."
Me: , "Is that true?"
My Daughter: "Yeah, well he told me to."
Me: "If he told you tocut off your toe, would
you?"
My Daughter: "Ha ha ha! Yes!"
Me: "Did you tell her to?"
My Son: "No."
Me: "Re4lly?"
My Son: "Well, she said 'Do you want me to pour
water on your bed?"'
Me: "And what did you say?"
My Son: "I said YES because I knew that she
wouldn't do it."
Me: "Apparently you DIDN'T know. Why
did she want to pour water on your bed?"
My Son: "I don't know."
Me: "Why did you want to pour water
on his bed?"
My Daughter: "Because he said that
our friendship was over."
Me: "Didyou say that?"
My Son: "Y:"
Me "So ypu knew why she wanted to
pour water on your
• My Son: "Of course."
Me: "So. When. I. Asked. You..Why. She. Wanted.
To. Pour. Water: On Your Bed. Why. Didn't. You.
Tell. Me?"
My Son. "I don't know."
Me (ding my. teeth): "Goodnight!"
My Son (to his sister): "NOW our friendship is
REALLY over"
I know, know. It can only get easier. Soon, they'll
be tucking ME in.

i11 on pre -engineering
Dear Editor,
An innovation of the Harper
Conservatives according to the Mayor
the past, . cities O the
"In
of Charlottetown isp ,
could carry out pre -engineering work
and include those costs as part of the
infrastructure funding.
But now, if a city goes ahead with that pre -engi-
neering work the city will have to foot the full
costs on its own." `
It will not surprise me, or anyone that lives out-
side the urban in the less populated areas of
Canada, if there is little of the stimulus dollars
coming: our way. Only the more affluent munici-
palities will have an engineer on staff, and as
such it is only in these areas where the projects
will start.
The stimulus package will not have an impact
on the recession or cushion Canadians from its
harsh realities in poorer municipalities that need it
the, most. The combined deregulation of environ-
ment and waters acts, and the rules governing
access to stimulus funding leads to these two
things. In exchange for much needed jobs and
work big industry. will be allowed to do what they
want _.with the land and water resulting
in our future generations paying the
Zt price for clean-up, shoddy work
bus
through higher property taxes, utilities,
water, consumer goods/services.
Harper is in a win-win situation.
He has, through changes in the Navigable
Waters Protection Act and Investment Canada ;.
Act, managed to put into law his deregulation of
government intervention dogma.
This', at the same time selling people his stimu-
lus package will bring immediate work and jobs.
It has been done in NL since Confederation.
People has,
in governments, just for a job or
even a potential job. Resources have been given
away. Harper is now using the same tactic, but it
will be across Canada. The only thing in his way
were the regulations and they are gone.

PDF version working well for `older eyes
Dear Editor,
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the
PDF version of the Sentinel. I now read the entire
edition online the Tuesday before the publication
date instead of a week or more late for the printed
version. The electronic version is much easier to'read
and for 'older eyes' can be magnified to suit the read •
er. The photos are much sharper as well. Thank you
for making this available to your subscribers.
