The Grassroots Rural
Retreat, just east of
Lucknow on Highway 86,
is gearing up for its sec-
ond year of Community
Shared Agriculture
(CSA). The first year was
named their `apprentice
year', but Vicky
Morrison, owner of
Grassroots believes 2009
will be a. good year for
fresh community vegeta-
bles.
There are many kinds of
CSA farms, ones that deal
with shares and others that
include payment in
advance at an agreed upon
price.
The Grassroots Retreat
CSA farm offer a small
basic box at $225, which
works out to $14 per
week. A small box is
enough for 1.2 people. A
large box at $375, which
works out to $24 per
week. • It's enough for 3-4
people. If people want the
can always order more
than one box.
With the economy the
way it is now, working
within the community to
provide people with local-
ly grown food is a way of
supporting local business-
es and the local economy.
"CSA really supports
the local economy, agri-
culture and the communi-
ty. It keeps the dollars in
the community itself,"
said Morrison. "People
are getting fresh produce
and not buying into the
transportation costs of get-
ting produce outside of
the area."
The idea of getting veg-
etables when they are in
season is a healthier one
since they are in better
condition and have more
of the natural vitamins
that come along with the
vegetable. It's something
that is always guaranteed
to be fresh rand ready to
eat.
