BYGARITREID Sentinel Staff The Lucknow 4-H Dairy Club based out of Huron County goes a long wax with one's future endeavours as it covers social skills, future job opportunities and a lot more through- out the farming industry with lot ofemphasis on dairy. The are still two clubs in the Huron County area, with Lucknow Dairy Club in the north end and the other in the south central area. The leaders of the Lucknow Dairy Club are Mel Ritchie, Nil Vincent and Perry Van Osch. They have continued on a long and strong tra- dition of passing on the knowledge of the dairy industry to kids aged 10 to 21. The kids who get involved in the club have to complete a project information book that is supplied to them at the beginning of the season, attend four out of the six club meetings. and ,they must show a calf project at achievement day. The information book consists of a member recording the calf's of Z height weights, size, the animal and record what hasbeen fed to them. They. also have to record if the animal has been sick, if it has con- tracted . a disease of any kind. This all begins in May sand runs right through to September when they have to show their calf at achievement day 4-14 members are also inspected' at their farms to see if they are doing everything properly. "It's a lot like school when learning how to take care of your calf," said Perry Van Osch, one of the Dairy Club lead- ers in Lucknow. "The Lucknow 4-H Dairy Club is a group we try to get kids aged 10- 21 to join in order to learn about the dairy industry ' and how to improve quality of th cattle they are responsi- ble for during the year," said Van Osch. 4-14 has always been a big part of the rural community and Van Osch realizes that it does. a lot for the growth of the kids involved. Not only do the kids acquire an education they also obtain practical experi- ence that will help them through their careers and everyday lives. "Beside the aspect of learning the dairy indus- try it : basically gets. you out andinvolved in the community," said Van Osch. "You can also travel the country, the world through exchanges. The opportu- nities are endless with 4- 14. It's just how far : you want to go with it." It's a recurring theme, but 4-H is something that looks 'good on a resume and not only that, for employers it's something recognizable when it comes to the rural community. It gar- ners respect because of the education and practi- cal knowledge that comes with it`. "Through 4-1-I it adds to one's resume. They get noticed quicker by employers. I've had kids come and join the . club simply because they. need , something like this before the could be accepted into school," said Van Osch. The club also tries to branch off into other areas of the farming industry to give their kids a different perspec- tive and maybe . some- thing they might choose to pursue. "Out of the six meet-. ings We have, we'll have one that isn't about dairy. In the past we have went to meetings on milking sheep, a horse meeting and beef meetings. :We always try to pick a different sector in the agricultural indus- try," said Van Osch. The Lucknow Club will bestarting their year in mid-March and they welcome new mem- bers to comeout and join 4-11, to meet, learn and grow with other young people in and out- side of Huron County. .If anyone is interested in being a part of 4-11 in the Huron County area they can give one of the leaders a call and they will help you to join a dairy club in the county.
