have to add a lot of
propane to warm the air,
it's quite a cost," he said.
"If you can get that
down by using recovered
energy, it's not only good
for the farmer's pocket
books, but for the envi-
ronment because you are
burning less," he said.
"Innovation has been
the hallmark of Ontario's
outstanding agri-food
sector. Today's award
winners represent the
ingenuity and leadership
that thrives on Ontario

Energrow/Hofarm Ltd. in
Newton.
McCully's Hill Farm
puts out the welcome mat
for more than 3,000 stu
dents a year, with group
tours and weekend events
adding to that number.
It's all part of David•
Pulen's continuing
efforts to .educate and
motivate people to make
positive changes in agri-
food systems, in environ-
mental protection' and in
rural communities.
In addition to experi-
encing the farms educa-
tional programs, visitors
can shop at the on-farm
market, where local pro-
ducers showcase and sell
their products.. The farm
also has plans to establish
a Centre for Rural
Learning, which will be
devoted to . inspiring
awareness and action on
issues related to local
food security, agriculture,
and the environment.
Jasmin Hofer of
Energrow/Hofarm Ltd. is

s queezin the mostout of
her opportunities. She
designs and manufactures
small scale oilseed and
vegetable oil presses.
The idea is to enable
Ontario farmers to
process their own oil
seeds, producing feed and
fuel to minimize costs
and generate additional
on-farm income. The sys-
tems encourage environ-

Although still suse6`ptible
to spring frost, many
Apricot varieties have
been especially :Tired for
the. southern Ontario cli-
mate. These include
Harcot, Harglow,
Hargrand, Harlayne,
Harogem, and Harval
from Harrow and Veecot,
Velvaglo and . Vivagold
from Vineland.
Nutrition
An excellent source of
beta -carotene, Vitamin C
and potassium. However,
while the fruit can be
safely cooked intact, the
kernels of most North
American varieties can be
extremely bitter and. gen-
erally should not be
eaten.
. History
A temperamental . plant,
apricots need a dry cli-
mate in which to thrive.
They grow wild in the
mountains of north-west-
ern China and central
Asia and have probably
been cultivated for at
least 5,000 years.
Apricots flourished in
ancient Rome and the
Moors also. established
them in .Spain. King
Henry VIII's gardener
imported them to England
in the 1500's and grew
them in protected walled
gardens.
Apricots were probably
introduced to North
America by the
Franciscan brothers in
California some 200-300
years ago(
