Steam generator in the plans
BY TROY PA1I1ERSON

Canadian Agra has plans for con-
struction on an electric steam generator
for its Bruce Dehydration Plant, with
enough room for additional capacity
•that it could provide for the entire
industrial park.
President, and CEO Helmut Sieber
said it's unfortunate that Bruce Power
would not renegotiate .the contract he
claimed the company once had to pro-
duce steam, but is instead moving for-
ward to build the first of. four electric
steam -generating boilers near the site
off Bruce Road 20.
"It's not something we would have
liked to do," \said Sieber, who was
adamant that Bruce Power should be
using its excess heat from the nuclear
plant to produce steam, rather than
channel it into Lake Huron. "We
planned for a small season (in 2007).
Next year we're planning on a full sea-
son and it's very important we're ready
for it."
They hope to start construction on
,the project once the weather allows.
Sieber said each structure will produce
60,000 lbs/hr of steam for the facility.
The capacity of the entire existing
steam infrastructure is about 240,000
lbs/hr, which could be produced with
three additional boilers. He said by
negotiating a connection directly to the
electrical grid, the company will save
on delivery costs, producing steam for
about half of what it's currently being -
produced for at the park.
Once they begin construction, Sieber
said he will invite neighbouring busi-
nesses like Steelback Brewery, Biax,
Greenfield Ethanol Commercial
Alcohols and the dormant D'Angelo
Bell Pepper Greenhouses, to partner
with the endeavour.
The companyissued an apology to its
alfalfa and corn producers last year
because of the problems securing steam
and getting the plant operational.
Canadian Agra had actually looked at
disassembling and moving the entire
facility to the United States this year,
he said. But Bruce County needs the
plant, he claimed, as the soil provides a
steady supply of 'alfalfa and corn for
their product. Sieber said theyevenhad
an offer from an American consortium
that would pay the $4-5 million in
moving expenses for the facility.
