Ash trees are a big component of the ecology of the area

"We believe it's being
spread mostly, at this
point, by people transport-
ing fire wood. That is the
big issue," he said, noting
the industry that deals
with logs and wood prod-
ucts on a larger scale have
been educated on the
issue.
"The problem is, that
when a tree dies, the auto-
matic thing to do is to cut
it up into fire wood and
move it to'a campground
or cottage and that's what
really hurts," he said.
Smith said visitors and
residents of Perth County
need to know where their
wood is coming from and
it has to be local.
"This restriction is in
place to preserve our
forests and shade trees.
Ash is a hugecomponent
here and the ecological
impact is staggering if the
insect gets into Perth
County," he said.
is trying to stall for time
because research is being
done with wasps and
viruses to balance out the
invasive_ insect.
"If it works well, there
is hope. So if we can buy
some time, Perth County
may not suffer the same
'devastation ' that has
Smith said Perth County affected areas dike Essex
County - essentially they
have - no more ash trees,"
he said
The larval stage of the
insect is the problem, said
Smith. The adult Emerald
Ash Borer lay eggs that
hatch into larva. These
larva burrow into the
inner bark and outer wood
of the ash tree.
Re said eventually, lar-
val become so numerous
that they encircle the tree.
with their tunnels, which
cuts off the food supply
from the leaves to the
roots and the water supply
from the roots to the•
leaves, essentiallykilling
a tree.

t usually takes a while
for the numbers to build
up to that point, but it's
almost inevitable once the
insect is present," Smith
said.
"Basica ly, Perth
County wants to educate
people to keep their fire-
wood local,". he said.
