by Elmer Brubacher and family.
The business is in its fifth year
and operates as a community
growing project consisting of 10
Mennonite families. Their pro-
duce is all processed through
tleaning machines, graded
then packaged for whole-
salers or to be sold at the W t

Kinloss Farm Fresh Produce has
60 acres of vegetables and fruits as well as 15 acres of sweet corn..
Many of their fruits and vegetables are available continuously
throughout the growing season.
They also sell home-made goods including jams and jellies, rel-
ishes, maple syrup and honey as well as gladioli,:crafts and wood-
en lawn chairs.
The farm market stand is open mid-May to the end of October,
Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays.

Protecting Perth's ash trees

With a large population of ash
trees here, Perth County is taking
measures . to protect the. .species
from the invasive Emerald Ash
Borer.
Marvin Smith, Perth County
Tree and Weed Inspector, esti-
mates that one-third of all the
trees in the county are ash, and
the introduction : of the insect
would : have devastating effects. on
the tree population here.
Neighbouring Middlesex
County is now a controlled area
by the, federal government. This
makes the movement of wood,
most notably firewood, illegal
from 'Middlesex to Perth County.
"Perth County is desperately
trying to educate people not to
move firewood into Perth County
from infested areas. Movement of
firewood of any species into Perth
County is illegal and it is moni-
tored by the Canadian Food
.inspection Agency," said Smith,
noting that fines can be laid for
anyone caught.

"Unless people understand the
huge impact of moving an insect
like this and change their habits,
then we are going to have a hard
battle against it," he added.
Signs have been erected at four
main entrance to Perth County,
one on Highway 23 at Whalen
Corners, one on Highway 7 near
St. Marys, one at Prospect Hill
and the other north. of Granton.
Smith said the Emetald Ash
Borer is thought to have
come from China in wood
packing material that were
shipped in with industrial
parts or products that
ended up in Detroit and
has spread from there.
"My understanding is
that this wasn't even
known in Canada until
2002, in fact what they
first were trying identify
what was killing ash trees
in the Windsor area, they
would find this insect and
.they had a hard time iden-
tifying
dea-of ying it because it just
wasn't; known in this part
of the world, he added.
"This is why it's a problem
because when things are intro-
duced, it takes a while for natural
defences or predators to build
up "
He said- what is happening right
now, is the Emerald Ash Borer
still being unknowingly spread by
people who aren't aware or are
not careful with movement of
wood.
