Beef Club has long tradition
BY GARTT REID
Sentinel Staff
The 4-H motto is "Learn to do by
doing," and that's exactly the message the
Lucknow Beef 4-H Club has conveyed to
its members every since its conception.
4-H is an informal hands-on education
program for youth between the ages of 10
and 21 years of age. "
"I guess it all started back when I .was
12 -years -old," said Don Alton. "My broth-
ers and sisters_were in the 4-H club and I
just followed suit. It was a family tradition
back then, and I just carried it on with
pride," said the formaer leader.
The club, based out of Huron County,
has been around for more than 60 years.
and at one time it boasted a membership: of
40 and over the years the club has contin-
ued to do well at the Royal Winter Fair in
Toronto and other highly regarded events.
Many members over the years have won
the Queen's Guineas, the highest award at
the Royal winter Fair in showmanship and
breed awards.
The Brussels Show and Sale has also
provided an opportunity for all club mem-
bers to sell their market animals.
One of the main things a member is
t is how to take care of an animal for
breeding or market purposes. Many mem-
bers " may have their breeding animal for
years.
For the members taking care of an ani-
mal teaches responsibility and gives kids a
lot of focus. It also teaches them the art of
winning and losing.
"It teaches a lot of kids how to dose. It's
easy to learn how to win, but when you are
last, it shows you how. to `get better and by
doing so, gives the kids a lot of self confi-
dence that they can do ; a lot on their own,'
said SherryAlton, part of the Beef Club
and a volunteer for the Lucknow Fall Fair.
