Willowgrove Hill farm first to go organic

Paul Hill lias been a pork
producer his whole life.
His father started pig
farming in 1971 and today,
Hill continues to raise pigs
on the same faun :he was
raised on north of Mitchell.
But there is a difference
between the pigs his father
raised and the ones that are
on the Hill farm today.
Hill's 500 sow, farrow to
finish hogs are still premi-
um home -raised but now
they are enhanced with
EPA/DHA omega 3
polyunsaturated saturated fatty acids

and: organic : selenium. The
pork is also antibiotic free.
Willowgrove Hill is the
first in Ontario to , do this,
and to the best of their
knowledge, the first across
North America.
"Consumers demand
healthier and safer foods,"
he said as one of the rea-
sons for nutritionally
enhancing their pigs.
But one of the biggest
reason comes from family.
At age 11, Hill lost his
father to a heart attack.
Tragically, in 2001 he and
his wife Rosie lost their
oldest son Ryan at age two
to liver cancer.
"That is what drove me
to this niche market more
than natural or organic
pork. It's one I truly
believe in," he said.
Omega 3 with
DHA/EPA and organic
selenium are prevention to
both cancer and heart dis-
ease. The EPA helps with.
the development of l the
heart while DMA assists
with the healthy develop-
ment of the eyes and brain.
Selenium is known to pre-
vent certain cancers.
"It reduces the ri*k of
prostate cancer by 80 per
cent," Hill noted.
The omega 3 used in the
Willowgrove Hill pigs is a
human grade fish oil and is
the best source of DHA
and EPA. Other omega 3
fatty acids . are found in
plant sources, such as flax,
but do not contain
DHA/EPA. The liver can
absorb these omega 3's
and convert them to the
beneficial fatty acids, but
the conversion rate is low.
Hill said one .•o f the
biggest misconceptions
about the Willowgrove Hill
pork is that it will have a
fishy taste because of the
fish oil.
"There is no fishy taste.
Our pork just tastes good,"
he said
Hill worked with nutri -
tionists at Grand Valley
Fortifiers in Cambridge to
design the right feed mix
for their hogs.
"We have been working
at this for over a year -and -
a -half," he said.
Because of the nutrition-
al enhancements,
Willowgrove Hill is able ,to
market their own product.
"It is challenging. It is
like bottled water, five
years ago few people were
buying in, now everyone
buys bottled water. We.
have to prove our product
and we have given a lot of
product away. to . do that,"
Hill said.
