Parents need to consider children's health
Children tend to get sick faster and more often
than adults. So when parents considering travel say
"Let's take the kids withus," they need to realize
that travelling out of country can present different
health risks for their children, especially if they are
.planning to visit a lesser -developed country.
An important point to consider is their child's
routine vaccinations. Diseases such as measles,
which are not very common in Canada, are still a
major cause of death in lesser -developed countries.
It is extremely important that, parents ' make sure
that their children are up to date on their publicly
funded vaccinations before they travel. -
Parents - must also understand that diseases such
as typhoid, yellow fever and malaria, which are not
found in Canada, can spread to travellers. If these
diseases are present in the areas they plan to visit,
parents need : to . make _ sure that their children
receive the necessary vaccination or .medication to
protect against these diseases. For infants, some
travel vaccinations and medications cannot be
given to children under a certain age. Travel vacci-
nation/medications are not publicly funded.
Public Health offers a free travel package con-
taining health and safety information on your trav-
el destination. Please request your travel package
at least two months before the date you plan to
travel to allow time for vaccination scheduling. If
you have any questions about, what vaccination
and/or medicine your children might need, contact
your health care provider or the Grey Bruce Health
Unit at 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 or visit
the website at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca.
