Four day week
A four day week
is officially an
option for Bruce
county employees.:
A pilot project in
the treasury depart-.
ment resulted in
more .productive
staff that was less
stressed about bal-
ancing the demands
of work and home,
clerk Bettyanne
. Cobean told coun
cillors.
The option of
four day weeks will
now expand to
nearly 700 employ-
ees in other county
departments.
Flexible schedul-
ing means some
thinking outside the
box to make sure
public . access to
Monday to Friday
service is not inter-
rupted, Cobean
said.
"At first you
might think this
isn't going to work.
But if you give it
the opportunity the •
staff rise up to the
challenge as well,"
she said.
• Cobean read a
litany of comple-
ments about the
four day week from
staff who took part
in, the . pilot project.
Some : ;appreciate
saving .on gas, oth-
ers like the extra
time to be with fam-
ily,'take care of par-
ents or schedule
appointments with-
out interrupting the
work day.
"It reduces stress
in their personal
and professional
lives," Cobean said.
Flexible scheduling
is also another way,
to recruit and keep
staff.
"It's a tremen-
dous policy. The
lower tiers should
look at it," said
Brockton mayor
Charlie Bagnato,
citing benefit. to
morale • and the
environment. His
municipality started
four day weeks for
office staff . in
August.
Kincardine
Mayor Larry
Kraemer echoed
Bagnato's Com-
. ments and com-
mended staff for
coming up with the
pilot project. He
gave a vote of sup-
port to "anything
you can do to
enhance the lives of
your employees and*
make sure produc-
tion is just as good
or I'm sure better".

Safety
Investment in a
safety culture is
paying off for
Bruce County.
The county's
nearly 700 employ-
ees had 33 lost time
incidents last year,
down 11 from the
year before.
Fewer .and less
severe . injuries
mean less pain for
employees and less
cost for the county,
said safety coordi-
nator Randi . Del
Guidice.
Keeping injury
statistics low
requires continued
teamwork and train -
Del Guidice
told county council-
lors.
"I know it's
budget time but to
keep these numbers
down we have to
keep the spending
on safety up,". he
said.
Del Guidice
promised three
years ago that num-
bers would come
down if the county
invested in safety
training. So far his
prediction is corn-
ing true.
Costs for claims
under the WSIB last
year were at
$26,000 compared
to well over
$100,000 in previ-
ous years... Oyer
e, etion, skips° apd
trips, needle sticks
and assault .from
aggressive patients
account for the
range of incidents.
Over exertion is the
largest category,
said manager
Joanne Sutton, but
the percentage of
those incidents
compared . to , all
claims is declining.
The downward
trend is the result of
teamwork and
investment in safety
training. • Del
Guidice said.
"The severity of
the accidents , are
lesser.. That's the
•
important part that
people are not in
pain. I know it's a
numbers game but
at the end of the day
it's people making
it home to their
family," he said.
The challenge
Del Guidice sees
for Bruce County is
that it has nearly
700 employees on
widely Scattered
sites. Those
employees need
training so they
reinforce safety
with each other, he
said.
He also wants to
extend safety con-
cerns to public.
That means
increased safety
measures around
highway construc-
tion sites. .
