A more conser-
vative version of
the presentation
for a new school
was prepared by
the Central East
North Huron
Accommodation
R .e v i e w
Committee, in
light of feedback
from the commu-
nity on the extrav-
agance of such a
school inthis
area.
The junior
kindergarten to
Grade ; 8 school ---
dubbed the North
Maitland
Educational
Centre for
Excellence still
includes plans for
"green" opera-
tions, such as
rainwater collec-
tion, geothermal
heating, and natu-
ral lighting, as
well as prioritiz-
ing accessibility,
and modern ath-
letic facilities, but.
noticeably absent
in the second
draft of the pres-
entation were the
words `super -
school', and pho-
tos of rock -climb-
ing walls -- two
points of contro-
vers.y the ARC
faced when : pre-
senting to the
public in previous
meetings.
The: ` original
estimate of $21-
24 million has
been paied down
to $14-16.6 mil-
lion for construc-
tion costs.
Blyth ARC rep-
resentative David
Spading pointed
out that the Avon'
Maitland District
School Board has
$8 million bud-
geted for .repairs,
and if the propos-
al is accepted for
the new school to.
be built, all non-
necessary projects
would be stopped,
and those funds
Would . be for-
warded to the new
build.
"Suddenly • that
becomes a much
smaller figure to
chew on," he said.
AMDSB
trustees have yet
to see the propos-
al, but they will
be seeing it later
this month, and
any decisions
won't be made
before June.
The ARC has
come up with
three recommen-
dations to make to
the board when
they present at the
April 14 board
meeting. The first
is a recommenda-
tion that the board
does not Move the
Grade 7 and 8s to
the secondary
school because of
overwhelming
public. -opposition.
The second is that
the AMDSB close
Blyth Public,
Wingham Public,
Turnberry
Central, and East
waw-anosh
schools, and build
a new school: , to.
accommodate the
affected students.
The last recom-
mendation is that
the board includes
members of the
public in the
building process
of the new school
to create a con-
nection and sense
of community.
Trustees will
vote 60 days later,
and they'll choose.
to either accept
the recommenda-
tions, change
them, or outright
reject them.
The final ARC
meeting is sched-
uled for March
12, at Wingham
Public School,
where the recom-
mendations will
be reviewed and
amended.
The meeting is
open to the pub-
lic.
