Summerfest always
looking for new
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The Lucknow Strawberry Sumerfest is coming back
for another year and the mgcommittee is always looking for.
people to get involved to help out with the work load.
Chair of the Summerfest committee, Betty Stanley, has
been discouraged about the number of people attending
their recent meeting, but she is optimistic that they will still
put out a myriad of events for Summerfest. _
At our last meeting there were four people that showed
up, the meeting before that just two. We . are getting there,
but we are happy that the Lions Club looks to be taking
care of the car. show again this year and we are pretty sure
the Legion is taking- on the breakfast again this year," said
Stanley.
Stanley and the rest of . the Summerfest committee are
looking to :get anyone involved even if they are • just inter-
. ested in helping with specific events. They would just like
an influx of new ideas:
"Even if people don't want to commit to going to the
meetings all of the time they don't have to. A lot of our
stuff is done through email. We just want fresh new ideas,"
said Stanley. "We kind of get into the same routine of
things working over the past few years, let's just continue
on; but maybe there is something else out there that we
could be doing."
One of the big events that is in question, is the soccer
tournament, which still needs someone or a group to run it.
Last year the .Kinettes organized it. It ..brings a lot of kids to
the Summerfest, who take part in a lot of the kids events.
The kids events have always been free due to the help
fromSummerfest many sponsors the gets every year
and is something Stanley and the rest of the committee
would like to see continue. H
"We may have to scale things back, but it all depends on
the amount of sponsorship. We try to keep all of the activ-
ities for the kids free because a lot of them come off the
wagons from the soccer field," said Stanley. "They usual-
ly don't have mom and dad there to spend the money."
The Summerfest has been a part of Lucknow for sever-
al, years and they always rely on a lot of help from volun-
teers, service clubs and the Chamber of Commerce to keep
things going.
Stanley said things may have to be scaled back, but
doesn't want the Summerfest to take a break for a year.
Getting it started up again, she mentioned would be diffi-
cult.
"Last year everyone said, don't you think you should let
Summerfest slide for a year when the reunion was on? If
you let it slide, I don't think it would ever start up again,"
said Stanley. "For now it would be nice to keep things
going."
