Phelps deservessecond chance
I flunk everyone, including the media,
should give eight time Olympic gold
medalist Michael Phelps a break when it
comes to the recent pictures of him
inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
Yes it's wrong, but is it the worst thing
in the world? What if it were a picture of
him drinking from a liquor bottle?
Marijuana is an illegal substance
and he should have been aware of
the :espouse he'd get if the photos
went public..
He's a young kid : who . made a
mistake. He publicly apology
and it's over with, so the med
•
and ' the rest of the world
should drop it.
Some of the outrage is
because he is- thought of as a
role model for kids and young
' swimmers. This may : the one
aspiring y
area- where Phelps s : should be do' the
.
most damage control.
He should care what kids drink of ,Mari
have a certain responsi-
bility
he does r'apo
bility being a public figure, to give kids
the right example..`
Doing drugs shouldn't be one of these
messages.,
From all ;of the pass he has received,
one thing that Phelps comes off as is a
genuinely nice person.
Smoking marijuana night not be the
best image he wants to portray, but it's
not like he robbed a bank or killed
someone.
He is human and he made a mistake
and making m i stakes is something
young people do. This is something
he'll have to learn from.
Another concern arising from this
incident was the fear that Phelps
might be dropped by his sponsors.
After his public apology, all of his
sponsors accepted his apology and
are backing him except for
Kellogg's cereal.
It is interesting that one mis-
take can threaten to take
everything away from Phelps
He ; has worked hard to get
where he is. I guess that's a les-
son in itself. It only Y takes one
