Being retired, she can afford to spend her days cruising the city with her friends, looking for deals and, well, I guess looking for more deals. I don't know if I'm real PROUD to say this or not but most of her purchakes come from a store by the name of Value Village:,, For those of you who are not in the. "know" or possibly in the "care," Value Village is a store that resells previously enjoyed merchandise. It is a veritable treasure-trove of...um...merchan- dise that has been enjoyed previously. There are, according to the experts (my mother), many great bargains to be had there. This fact, for her, would be like a flame to your common moth. Somedays, she gets more than she planned. Last weekend, she and a friend paid their weekly visit. They split .up and went -their separate ways. Mom ended up in the "home decor" section and found a beautiful tea ket- tle. It was large and:, very new -looking with blue enamel on the outside and white ` enamel on the inside. "This is a great deal," she thought to herself. That is the way her brain warns her wallet that it is about to be called, upon. But don't think that my mother is the type of person who would just go into a store, find something that catches her eye and buy. it on a whim. Heavens. Don't think that. Before buying anything, my motersubjects her prospective purchases to a rigid inspection -process that leaves no question as to the quality of the item in -hand. For example, with clothing, you tug on all the seams. With toys, you check for choking haz- ards, cracks and loose parts. With tea kettles, you check the inside of the spout for chips. s. P P Why? Idont know. I'm sure there must be a good reason. Much like there must be a good reason for the WAY in which you perform this check: you jam your pointer finger down as far as it will go. The ordinary, run-of-the-mill consumer may expe- rience a small problem retrieving her finger from the afore -mentioned spout. Rest assured, my mom is far beyond ordinary. Yes, it's true. As soon as it went in, it was solidly glued to the inside of that kettle. And there she stood in all of her glory, purse in one hand and kettle stuck, spout first, on Feter Pointer. The other shoppers began to stare. Mom was not worried. "All I have to do is add a little moisture and my finger will slip right out," she reasoned. Casually, she lifted her finger up to her mouth and began licking her finger AND the spout all the way around. The other shoppers began to step away. Realizing that she was making a scene, she turned, nonchalantly tucked the kettle into her armpit, bent her head down and began licking l in earnest. Finger, Thumb, Spout, : Haidle...if it- was.. within reach, it was getting .moisturized. The other shoppers were suddenly VERY interest- ed in their. purchases. Mom didn't notice because she was locked in a life or death struggle with a second-hand kitchen appli- ance In her eyes, she was making great headway, but to everyone else, she was digging for chiggers. Finally, . and not a moment too soon, the `:kettle relented and released her finger. POP! Everyone breathed a sighof relief. ry A few minutes later, my mom's friend appeared. MyMom: "Where were. you? I got a `kettle stuck y on my er and had tolick it until it came off. I'm keeping it, though. I can tell itis . a good deal. I'm a Master Shopper!" Her Friend: "You're certainly a piece of work!" On Friday night the Lancers headed to Palmerston ` and handed ` the 81's their fifth loss of the season, by a score of 5-4. The boys played an excellent game of discipline and hockey with a great focus on defense. Erol Kahraman played absolutely amazing in net. He held a very tal- ented team to only four goals and made numerous key saves. Ryan Murley got the Lancers on the board in the first period when he ripped a point shot through a screen, provided by Rick Andrew and Adam MacDonald. Kyle Quinn got the Lancers second goal when he jumped on a rebound with 2:26 left in tfirst peri- od. Dan Drennan and Mark Hackett got the assists. In the second period Palmerston tied the game at the 9:42 mark only to see the Lancers respond 19 seconds later to take back the lead. Craig Moffat intercepted a pass then sent Jonny MacKinnon and Luke Drennan in on a. 2 -on -1. MacKinnon fed a beauty cross crease pass for an easy tap -in for Drennan. The third period saw one of the year's nicest goals. Luke Drennan sent MacKinnon in on a 2 -on -1. Jonny kept the puck and fired a perfectly placed snap shot over the goalie's glove hand, off the cross bar and in, giving the Lancers a 4M2 lead. Palmerston battled back hard and tied the game with 6:35 left to play. The team didn't lose focus and con- tinued to play hard and this hard work frustrated Palmerston and forced them into penalty trouble. The 81's took three minor : penalties along with 2-10. minute misconduct penalties in a span of two minutes. The Lancers capi- talized on the power play when Brian "Steamer" Stanley scored on a screened point shot with just over four minutes ' left. Craig Moffat pro- vided the screen. It was Steamer's first goal of the sea- son and it could: not have come at a bet- ter time. The Lancers played hard and came away with an. y important win 54. On Saturday night the team headed to Shelburne to play the second place Muskies. The team was handed a 6-1 loss. The score sounds lopsided but it was a much closer game than that. It seemed that the Muskies got all the bounces and breaks.' Scoring for Lucknow was Mark Hackett. Drew Fiddler and Kyle Guinn got the assists. Erol Kahraman played well in net. It has been team tradition to stop on the way home from Shelburne for some of the finest chili, compliments of Kay and Harvey Wheeler. The : team enjoyed the chili. and would like to thank the Wheelers for their hospitality. Ryan Murley is in his fifth season with the Lancers and has been named an Alternate Captain.. Murley is a terrific hockey player with . a great shot, tremendous speed and a soft set of ' hands. In the past few games Murley has been playing • his best hockey of the sea- son. The team plays at home against the fourth placed Durham Thundercats on Friday Jan. 23 at 8:30 p.m. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in: • Each of the nine vertical columns • Each of the nine horizontal rows • Each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes • Remember, no number can occur more than once in any row, column or box This week's puzzle sponsored by: VD. 14, R5MAZC Remax Land Exchange Ltd., Brokerage Independently Owned and Operated Mitchell Twolan Broker 100 Lake Range Drive, Point Clark RR 1 Kincardine, ON N2Z 2X3 Office: 519-395-0620 Email: mitch.twolan@remax-lx.ca Cell 519-955-0664 Fax: 519-395-0142 www.RemaxLandExchange.ca Sas answer an classified pages
