Like the rest of the world I was very excited when Barack Obama was elect- ed to be the 44th President of the United States of America. Change was in the air and the long suffering Bush administration was not long for this world. I'. m still excited to see the change he is going to bring the USA and hopefully the world as far as the economy and his foreign affairs policies go. One thing I'm wary of, is what Canada will get from the newly appointed president. There is speculation that he may want to reopen the North American Free Trade Agreement, which put a little dent in our economy when Mulroney allowed it to happen. Prime minister of Canada Stephen Harper may agree with President Obama due to the poor economy and that free trade may be an. option. This is however only speculation and if it happens that Harper opts for free trade, it will have a big drain effect on our resources. Foreign policy is something where President Obama is supto make a lot of change. .The main issue for.Canada is reduc- ing the troops in Iraq, so they can be sent to Afghanistan., Those in command want at least 15,000-20,000 American troops brought into help the undermanned Canadian soldiers. Canadian soldiers have been doing an exeniplary job in Afghanistan, but time 'Sentinel • emoins, is taking its toll on them and they des- perately need support. President Obama is set on reducing numbers in Iraq and hopefully he puts them in Afghanistan, but if doing will he ask Harper to extend s stay in Kandahar? The deadline for troop removal out : of Kandahar is 2011 for Canadian troops, but it's a pos- sibility the charismatic Obama will try to get Canada to extend that E%adllne. President Obama may also revert America back to more of an isolationist country to protect the American economy. This may affect . Canada, as : we are America's largest trading partner in the world. Two billion dollars a day in ` trade crosses the American/Canadian border. If that reduces by even a small : amount it will impact Canada greatly, especially in the weakest economy we've :. had since the great depression. The promise of change that President Obama has set for the world is very exciting, but Canada should be aware that this change may affect the country adversely. Itmay be change that is needed, to suffer short term losses, to hopefully secure long term stability in our econo= my and foreign policy. • I'd have to say I'm a realist and I have a belief that President Obama will make great change in the world. It's just going to get worse before it gets better. 10 e, sao1 • A Bruce county councillot says he's "fourteen notches beyond aggravation," over.the number and length of road y clo- sures this winter. • Saugeen Shores mayor Mask Kraemer, who operates a bus- ing business, said county load crews are doing a good job of Pg, Po plowing, but lice: aren't keeping up to date with road condi. tions. - News that the 1998 community impact grant will be the last one issued by Ontario Hydro caught Bruce County by sur- prise.
