Lancers come up with big 3-2 win against Ripley Wolves
The Lucknow
Lancers made some
headway in catch-
ing up, in the stand-
ings to their rival,
the Ripley Wolves
in Jan. 9 WOAA
Senior A hockey
action. They won
the game 3-1 in a
hard fought defen-
sive game. As of
now they sit sixth
and seventh respec-
tively in the North
division.
The first period
was all defense.
Neither team' gave
up an inch of space
on the ice. The rival
teams threw the
body around a lot,
but .it was all clean
hockey with only
y Y
three penalties
called in the period:
Both teams had a
lot of respect for
each other's
offences and both
teams were stingy,
when it came to
allowing anything
into the offensive
zones.
The second peri-
od was a different
stoy as the Wolves
broke the scoreless
tie with a quick
goal to start things
off.
That opened ` the
flood gates for
chances on both
sides in the second.
The tempo of the
game picked up
after that and it
made for some
exciting action as.
one could see from
the reaction of the
fans.
The ancers
started to take com-
mand of the, . game
in the latter part of
the period with
some key hits, as
the Wolvesg of into
a little bit of penalty
trouble.
"I think when we
came out in the sec-
ond and started
crashing the net
more. The fourth
line guys came out
and started throw -
ng the body
around. It just got
everyone's spirits
going on the
bench," said Brad
Burton, a forward
for the Lancers.
The Lancers
scored the equaliz,er
with under seven
minutes left in . the
second and scored
the go ahead goal
with just under 30
seconds to go on a
5-3 powerplay. That
goal was _ the even-
tual game winner
and some strong
goaltending by Erol
Kahraman kept
Ripley from scoring
anymore goals.
The go ahead
goal was a turning
point in the game as
it took the wind out
of the sails of . the
Wolves.
"The" goal felt
good. Jon
(MacKinnon) lost
the draw down in
the corner and
instead of taking
myself out of .the
play, I decided to let
the defense go in
and stick check
them. With that,
Luke (Drennan)
had the guy tied up
out front and then 1
just took the space
and found ( the
hole," said Burton.
The third was
almost identical to
the first period with-
defense
ith defiense taldng over
once again.
The Lancers put
the game away with
- ustfive minutes
left in the game
with h their third goal
of the
game.
