the furnishings of the hotel were sold

The Exeter Flax Mill completed the
season's threshing the middle of last
week, the crop being a heavy one and
the season a very busy one. Mr. jos.
Davis, the foreman, has had as many
as 65 Indians under his control most of
the season helping to harvest and
thresh the crop.
The weekly newspaper publishers of
Essex, Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, Ox-
ford Norfolk, Berth and Huron will
meet in the Tecumseh House, Lon-
dotn, on Friday,. October 17th.. The
President of the C:W.N,A., Loner
Eedy of Walkerton, and the chairman•
of the "Ontario section, will be present
and deliver addresses. '
All sawmills in Ontario, both large
and small, must now have licenses from
the Provincial Department of Lands
and Forests. The Government is taking
steps to check up on all saw mill own-
ers and see that they comply width,
the new law, which went into effect
July 1. Cost of license is from, $1 to
;i:5.
An automatic gear shift has been
patented. Tie driver has; no gears 'to
handle, ..except when shifting into re-
verse. As soon as the car is started
the shifting is automatic, sliding from
first to second and then to third as
the speed increases. .The gears auto-
matically shift back as the. car slows
down. The deviceis considered of in-
estimable. value to drivers in crowded
city traffic,

Under the direction of the Ladles'
Aird the Harvest Horne services •,were
conducted in James, Street Church on
Sunday. ;Members of the society took
the musical service as a choir, took
up the collection and acted as ushers,
The. pastor, Rev. E. Donnelly, preach-
ed appropriately both morning and .ev-
ening. The church was nicely decor-
ated and large 'congregations were
present.
DIED IN THE WEST
Word has been received in Exeter
of the death of Mr. Wesley Lyne, of
Edmonton, aged 58 years. The de-
ceased was a_ resident in Exeter for
a number of years having resided
with his uncle the late Thos. Sweet
and learned the mason trade with
Mr; Jas. Sweet. His death took
place September 18th, and,.the fitn,eral
was held on Sunday, September 21st.
His, bereaved widow is a' sister of
Messrs. Robt,. and Thos. Dinney, of
town. One sister, Mrs. Geo. Winter-
bottom, resides in London.
Mrs. W. G. Bissiett vilsithd in Lon-
don last week.
Mrs Jas" Bieer has returned from a
visit in London.
Mr, S. J. Hogarth returned Monday
from a visit to the West,
Mor W. J. Bisee.tt is visiting her sis-
ter, Mrs. Inksater in, Paris.
Mr Harry Sweet of Windsor spent
