Not enough health care workers received H1N1
vaccine, medical officer of health warns
The Huroh County Medical Officer of Health is very
concerned that not enough health care employees in Hu-
ron County are getting immunized against H1N1 and
seasonal flu.
Dr. Nancy, Cameron says low rates of immunization
put residents of long-term care facilities and patients in
hospitals at risk.
Cameron says she is pleased with the public response
so far to getting the vaccines so it's disturbing when
there are low numbers in health care employees.
"We know through research that the immunization of
health care workers is a key part of preventing a seri-
ous outbreak in a facility. People in facilities are more
vulnerable to serious complications and death from in-
fluenza. Health care workers have an obligation to the
highest standard of care of their patients - and that in-
cludes immunization."
Cameron is encouraging health care workers to get
their shot as soon as possible. She emphasizes that it's
not too late — people can get sick until the flu season
ends in April. She, also says families of people in facili-
ties should ask if the staff' have been vaccinated.
The H1N1 vaccine has been proven to be safe and
highly effective. Millions of Canadians have received the
vaccine, including over 17,000 Huron County residents.
Health care facilities are required to have policies that
say unimmunized health care workers cannot come to
work during an influenza outbreak unless they, agree to
be immunized or take antivirals during the outbreak.

nized staff could be a staffing issue if there are not
enough workers to provide care.
"Immunization is the most effective and safest way to
prevent influenza. Health care workers in Huron County
need to get their shots for both H1N1 and seasonal flu as
soon as possible to protect some of our most vulnerable
citizens," she says.
