The group, comprised of about a dozen students from Central Huron Secondary School, recently fin- ished "Funky Socks Week," one of several activist - driven theme weeks the group is holding this year. From Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, the group held a "No Brand Name" week, when members chose to boycott clothing with popular labels, some of whose methods of pro- duction have been linked to child labour and sweat- shops. From Dec. 14-18, the group hosted "One outfit, one week." Group members hand -decorated t -shirts and wore them all week. They also donated $20, which covered the cost of a t -shirt and passed on any left- over proceeds to charity. Fifteen -year-old Meagan Cardno, a Global Village member from Seaforth, says the group will likely do- nate to a number of charities, including the Habitat for Humanity Seaforth project, to which the group has already donated $200. Other charities that have benefited from Global Vil- lage donations include the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, World Wildlife Fund, Free the Children and the Ronalee Allen Memorial Orphan- age. The idea behind events such as "One outfit, one week" and "Funky Socks Week" are to highlight the fact that many people in Third World countries are living with much less than most Canadians, Cardno says. On Nov 20, the Global Village Club celebrated Na- tional Child Day by taking a vow of silence and not talking for 24 hours. "Many children don't have a voice," Cardno says. "When they say I'm hungry or I'm tired, they're not heard." This year marks the 20th anniversary of National Child Day, which was designated during the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The vow of silence, . like all Global Village Club ini- tiatives, was promoted at CHSS with posters and through word of mouth. Cardno, who joined the club shortly after starting high school last year, says students can expect to see more Global Village Club events at the school in the new year. "It's about helping people," Cardno says. "There are so many things to improve on." Anyone wishing to donate money to the Global Vil- lage Club, who will in turn make a donation to char- ity, can call Central Huron Secondary School at 519- 482-3471.
