"I've always had the atti- tude that I should let my coworkers with kids at home have it off instead, so I don't mind working Christmas and taking New Years off instead." As for spending time with relatives, a holiday get-together can easily be rescheduled, she says. "Christmas doesn't necessarily have to be celebrated on the 25th," she says. "Christmas is what you make of it and there are many alter- nate ways and times to celebrate it." David Lew, manager of Huron County Emergency Medical Ser- vices, says Christmas Day can be a busy day for paramedics. "We have a full complement of ser- vices on Christmas Day, just like every other statutory holiday," Lew says. "It can be a busy day, depend- ing on the weather and other fac- tors." There tends to be higher incidences of suicides around Christmastime, Lew says, adding that he once had to respond to an emergency of this type while working years ago in Northern Ontario. "Christmas can be a very stressful time for people," he says. "It always comes home at this time of year. Es- pecially with the economy the way it is, even more so now than ever, it can be a difficult time for people." Lew says 16 Huron County EMS employees are scheduled to work on Christmas day.
