St. Anne's students refurbish computers for local. families
With the help of Santa's technol-
ogy helpers from St. Anne's Second-
ary School, two Huron County fami-
lies will be receiving a refurbished
computer for Christmas this year.
Grade 12 students. Jason Flana-
gan, a St. James School graduate
and Mackenzie Wilder, a St. Boni-
face School graduate, took two used
computers donated to the school
and did the necessary upgrades on
the .computers afterschool with the
help of their teacher Doug Discepo-
lo.
"It was part of a semester project.
I'd never done it before but it wasn't
too hard," says Flanagan.
Flanagan says going to St. James
School, which principal Joanne
Lombardi describes as a very "com-
puter saavy school," led to his inter-
est in computers.

Wilder says it was
the CommTech pro-
gram at St. Anne's that
piqued his interest in
computers and now he
is the computer whiz
in his family.
"I come from a fam-
ily that is really tech-
nologically disabled so
I'm the one they de-

that since comput-

munities who would otherwise be
without one at home.
"Being able to donate them to our
former schools made the project
more important. We were very cau-
tious to do a good job," says Wilder,
adding that the computers, while
not the best on the market, will
have all the equipment needed to
serve a family's purpose.
They added RAM and software,
such as antivirus and anti-spyware
programs, cleaned out the dust bun-
nies and hooked up printers.
Lombardi says a St. James family
has already been picked out to re-
ceive the computer, a donation that
was exciting to receive.
"We've got it all figured out. It's a
secret but it's a nice fit," she says.
Lombardi says there are only sev-
en families at St. James who don't
receive their school newsletters
electronically,. an indicator how es-
sential computers
are today.
"What a nice
thing to bring
back to the com-
munity," she says
of the donation.
