Local response is generous to Huron Christmas Bureau
While the demand for help rose
slightly this Christmas, the Seaforth
office of the Huron County Christ-
mas Bureau was overwhelmed by
donations this year, says organizer
Anne Middegaal.
"It went really, really well. It was
busy and people were so generous so
we had no trouble meeting the de-
mand," says co-organizer Catherine
Melady.
Seaforth's Christmas Bureau saw
an increase to 54 families, compared
to last year's 48 and 122 children,
compared to last year's 121.
"The weather cooperated and the
donations were fantastic," says Mid-
degaal, who adds that because there
were so many toy donations, the
Christmas Bureau was able to pass
along a few to T.H.E. Bus, a toylend-
ing library that travels throughout
Huron County.
Some of the larger donations in-
cluded $600 from the Seaforth Opti-
mists and a huge donation. of cloth-
ing from Sun North.
"Other communities had to put out
a call for more groceries but we didn't
have to ask at all. We were able to
pass a few extra couple of boxes to
the food bank," says Middegaal.
As well, she says the financial do-
nations were up from last year but
wouldn't say how much.
While the organizers were expect-
ing an increased need this year, Mid-
degaal says she's hoping . that every-
one who needed the help registered
to receive it.
"We did have people who'd lost
their jobs and found themselves on
their own this year and couldn't face
Christmas without help. We're really
thankful they called since
lot of courage to ask
says.
"We thought
there might have
been more so I
hope everyone
who needed . it
called since we r
would have been
able to help more
people," says
Middegaal.

and Middegaal

Sound system tested for Huron East
Along with amplified sounds of crackling pa-
per and coughing came the louder and clearer
communication of councillors' voices as Huron
East tested a sound. system for the council
chambers at its Dec. 15 meeting.
"Paul was good enough to bring in a sound
system so we could sample it tonight," Clerk -
Administrator Jack McLachlan told council.
Paul Stephen, of Innovative Security Sys-
tems, is one of two companies providing a re-
quest for proposal to the municipality for a
sound system.
Stephen set up a system with four micro-
phones and said that speakers could be in-
stalled at the back of the council chambers
above the public gallery so that councillors
could be better heard.
He said that while other councils use indi-
vidual mikes for each councillor to avoid cross
talk, he was trying to meet council's needs at
an affordable budget.
"I like the idea of not turning them on and
off," said Mayor Joe Seili, adding that at coun-
ty council he often forgets to turn on his micro-
phone until he's halfway through his speech.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffier said he thought
the sound system is a must in the council
chambers. He said he had trouble hearing
anyone speak during the Ontario Municipal
Board hearing in the coun-
cil chambers in the fall.
McLachlan said the de-
cision about which sound
system to use will be made
in the new year.
