Contest winners will receive free photo shoot
Giving is awesome - the sentiment
and spirit of the Christmas season is
alive and well for two local photogra-
phers participating in a world-wide
charitable event.
Giving is Awesome is a contest,
where photographers the world over
donate a full session to one lucky re-
cipient who may not otherwise get
the chance.
"This is the second year I've done
it," said Erin Samuel of A Simple
Photograph. "It's just the spirit of
Christmas and a fun thing to do."
Samuel said she was attracted to
the premise of Giving is Awesome,
and is looking for emailed submis-
sions for nominees.
"People can nominate somebody
they think is awesome for whatever
reason," Samuel said. "Just email me
the details."
For Darlene McCowan of Jakal
Photography in Seaforth, there is a
sentimentality in offering the gift of
photography.
"I know how tough it was for my
mother to provide for her children,"
she said. "I know how important pho-
tos are for me and I think somebody
else could use that gift. It's very sen-
timental."
Both photographers participate in
the Smiling Eyes Foundation - offer-
ing free photography shoots to people
battling cancer. Both said Giving is
Awesome is a natural extension of
that same giving spirit.
For anyone who knows some-
one who is having a hard time with
Christmas, was laid off, or just can't
afford a photo shoot, this is a chance
to give them the gift of lasting memo-
ries.
The successful nominee will be
contacted Christmas Eve, and will
receive a high-resolution DVD of the
photography shoot.
Samuel said she is looking for
"hopeful, inspiring Christmas -type
entries," while McCowan is looking
for "anyone who is in need of a nice
gift for Christmas who couldn't afford
it otherwise."
Of course, there is one underlying
criteria...
"The only qualifying factor is the
awesomeness," Samuel said.
There are about 300 photographers
throughout North America and the
world participating in the event, and
more than $300,000 in free photogra-
phy given to the winning candidates.
