Students photograph Seaforth landmarks that `catch the eye'

About a dozen local business own-
ers were shown a side of their stores
or offices that they might not have
noticed before, during a photogra-
phy show highlighting the work of
two Grade 12 students from Central
Huron Secondary School.
Lindsay Dolmage and Samniy Rob-
inet, both from Seaforth, invited the
business owners to see their work
being showcased at Seaforth Public
School on Dec. 7.
Beginning in mid-October, Dol -
mage and. Robinet began visiting
local businesses, including the To-
ronto Dominion Bank, Blooms N'
Rooms and the Seaforth Bakery, as
well as *government buildings such
as the post office, public library and
fire hall, to photo-
graph their work
environment.
"We took about
200 pictures per
business," Dol -
mage says. "Then
we narrowed it
down to, about 15-
20 best shots."
Dolmage and
Robinet experi-
mented with both
colour and black
and white cam-
era settings and
unique angles
when photograph-
ing their subjects,
whether it was a
man getting If
haircut or a dog
waiting in the
bank for its owner
to finish using the ATM,
When looking for what they consid-
ered their best shots to be, Dolmage
and Robinet didn't have much trou-
ble figuring out which shots to show-
case.
"Whatever caught our eye," Robi-
net says.
It's all part of a community project
Dolmage and Robinet have under-
taken as part of their high school
communication technology class.
They sent out letters to randomly -
chosen local businesses, asking if the
students could get behind the scenes
at their working environments.
Dolmage and Robinet each used a
camera during the,sl-.1lots, at such lo-
cations as Total Image II, Bob's Bar-
bershop and UPI Service Centre.
"It was neat to go in where you nor-
mally wouldn't go for a business and
you can see all of it," Dolmage says.
They transferred their best digital
photos onto a CD, which was sent to
Sign Guys in Clinton, whoprinted
poster -sized prints for each busi-
ness.
Jacqui Vercruyssen, teacher of the
communications technology class,
says CHSS provided funding to pay
for the printing, as well as DVDs
featuring photos for each of the busi-
nesses.
"This was their brain child," Ver-
cruyssen says. "They said they had
really strong community ties and
wanted to work with local business-
es." •
Vercruyssen says one of the re-
quirements for the communication
technology course is that students
try to do something that is a "com-
munity -building exercise."
She says highlighting local busi-
nesses with a photography show was
a perfect fit and
something that's
never been done
before by CHSS
students.
"This is our
first ever;" she
says. "It's great
to see students
that are being
showcased and
to see them ac-
knowledged for
the great work
they are capable
of."
