And with those words, the Reeve of Central Huron made it a trifecta. Bert Dykstra will lead Huron County as Warden following a secret ballot by county council Dec. 2. That decision, coupled with the elections of Carol Mitchell as Huron - Bruce MPP and Ben Lobb as Huron - Bruce MP, means all three upper tier levels of government are led by resi- dents of Central Huron. Still, Dykstra proved humble as he accepted the appointment, . which saw him vying for the spot against Morris-Turnberry Mayor Dorothy Kelly. Outgoing Warden Ken Oke, Mayor of South Huron, made note of the large crowd on hand for the inau- Bert Dykstra gural ceremony at county chambers in Goderich. "It's great to see a large crowd be- yond the rail," he said. "This is the council day for the new warden ... but don't forget the old guy." In nominating Dykstra for the spot, Coun. John Grace (Goderich) noted Dykstra is known as a "true gentle- men" with compassion and commit- ment for and to Central Huron and Huron County. Grace also noted Dykstra was first elected to municipal council in 1991, and that he has been Reeve of Cen- tral Huron for two terms, where he has served on a number of boards and committees, including as chair- man of the Water Protection Steer- ing Committee since its creation in 2005. Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich) nominated Kelly for warden. In noting she served in an admin- istrative capacity for more than 20 years at the municipal level before becoming the Mayor of Morris Turn - berry in 2003, Shewfelt said Kelly has served on a number of commit- tees, including the Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee where she has done an "exceptional job" as chairwoman. Further, noted Shewfelt, it would be a sound move for the county to be led by a warden from one of its northern municipalities. During nomination speeches to council, Dykstra said his goals for the coming one-year term would be to continue working alongside fellow councillors for the betterment of Hu- ron County, "not as someone special but as one of you." "When 'I'm talking to you, I like to think we understand one -another," said Dykstra, who noted his manage - See DYKSTRA, Page 6 DEC. 18T" TO DEC. 23RD 10 AM SHARP Quality SAVE 20% TO 90% OFF OUR SALE PRICES •y: • : • CIIAIRSTH 4 fREE WHEN PHASED WI TABLE W MENNONITE SELECTED ...
